Make sure you ask for a new room

There are old and new rooms in the Amari Boulevard and you should ask for a new room. The new rooms are well organized, new furniture, computer connections, and the lights/air conditioning are remote controlled from bedside. Each day we were greeted and the staff was very attentive to our needs. The hotel is located within a short walking distance of the tram which will get you anywhere in Bangkok quickly. I also liked the 24 hour quicky mart across the street for fruit, bottled water, bakery and a pharmacy, Internet is available in the hotel or high speed internet within the block. There's a massage establishment within the block for a relaxing foot massage after a long day of sight seeing.

"Old furniture, needs refurbishing"

"Terribly disappointed. Room furniture and furnishing is very old, needs refurbishing/renovation. Certainly NOT VALUE FOR MONEY. I was put in non-smoking floor, just to find out my room is opposite a storeroom for the poolside restaurant. Horribly noisy when they return the outdoor furniture to the noisy towards midnite."

Amari Boulevard Hotel

We decided after one night in the lovely, but expensive, Grand Pacific Hotel that finding a less expensive place where we could have our own rooms wouldn't be a bad idea. A visit to an Internet cafe turned up the Amari Boulevard. We'd stayed at an Amari hotel in Phuket, and figured it would be OK. We scouted it out, found out the walk-in rates at the hotel (which were much more than the cheapest internet rate we found) and then went back to the internet cafe and book ourselves in for three nights.

The rooms were not as nice as the Grand Pacific. They were much smaller, and mine had a lovely view of the top of the hotel canopy. However, for about US$35 a night, I was not going to complain. It was clean and safe.

The room was furnished with a single large bed, a dresser with drawers for clothes, and a desk with color TV with remote (again, CNN Asia and BBC news were the only English language channels). There wasn't room for much more in the room -- walking space was a "track" around the sides and foot of the bed. There was a decent sized closet with a room safe. The bathroom had a great tub (complete with a rubber ducky!) -- large and deep. The shower was less satisfactory. It was set relatively low on the wall, so that I had to duck to rinse shampoo out of my hair, and I'm only about 5 feet 6 inches.

The room included breakfast, which was the Thai standard buffet mixing Eastern and Western foods. Eggs, breads, fruit and cereals were available, as were several Thai dishes (usually a meat or two, and some noodles). Grilled mushrooms and tomatoes often made an appearance. Coffee, tea and juices were poured freely.

All in all, if you want to be close to Sukhumvit Road but want a clean, comfortable and safe hotel, this is a good choice,
