My wife and I stayed at this hotel in February 2009 on a business trip. We enjoyed this hotel and had a better experience than at many hotels we used in China. The strong points are: location (next to subway and not far from Tiananmen Square); clean and modern (recently remodeled B-tower); cable TV with some english language programs;breakfast buffet (not cheap, but high quality); staff speak English well enough and were generally helpful; beds are firm, but comfortable (trust me, this is not the norm); free wireless internet; nice bathroom; safe provided for valuables in room. Weak points: the temperature in our room overlooking the coffee shop was hot and could not be cooled effectively (the AC blew warm air no matter the setting). Leaving the bathroom fan on helped a bit, but not enough. Note it was very cold outside, when we stayed, so not much to complain about there; the interior windows are quite well soundproofed, but the slight noise from the lobby/coffee shop could be annoying (the player piano especially -there is only so much 'Fuer Elise' one can take). While the breakfast buffet was good, the dinner buffet was disappointing, as was the hotel chinese restaurant (Utopia). The Galleria bar was deadly depressing and they messed up our drinks orders. Overall, a pretty good hotel for the price, especially the location.

Novotel is a brand name under Accor of a relatively low end mid-priced hotels. This was booked through www.agoda.com with no change, no cancellation policy at USD 71/night. When we checked in, we found ourselves assigned to the B building on the second floor. The room was older, with dark furniture, with windows facing the galleria but couldn't see out as their was some wall blocking our view outside. The room was too warm, we tried turning on the cooling and hot air come out, this was unacceptable. We went back to the reception, they informed us that it's winter and the air conditioning was turned off. They changed our room to the A side with a room facing the street for an additional CNY 80/day.
The difference in the look and feel was vastly different and a great improvement over the previous room. It was like day and night. The room on the A side was more modern, light colored wood and furniture from IKEA was the look and feel. Functional, adequate, clean, but diffinately not a four or five star hotel. In room broadband is available for an additional charge of CNY 1 per minute not exceeding CNY 100 per day. Free wi-fi access on the ground floor. Staying on the A side would have made the last part of our trip to China less enjoyable. Great location, a great tasting roast duck restaurant across the street facing the hotel.

The hotel was particularly nice. The room was clean and quiet, though surrounded by two busy streets and near a busy subway in the heart of Beijing. The staff was particularly helpful in arranging tours, providing guidance re: area visits, and making recommendations. I would highly recommend this hotel particularly for people who want to be in close proximity to Tiannamen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of the Heaven, etc. All within a short taxi ride or subway ride from the hotel. I took the subway to the Beijing Zoo, too, and that was very convenient.
