I don't know where to start, so I will just begin.
There was mold on the caulking around the shower enclosure and I had to ask for towels at the front desk before I could even use the shower to begin with because none were left by the cleaning crew.
The room smelled musty and like stale cigarette smoke, and it was supposed to be a nonsmoking room by their own admission. I called the front desk and confirmed that they indeed call this a nonsmoking room. The smell and an ashtray on the table, along with a burn in the bedspread, tell me that this was definitely a smoking room. During my call, I asked if there was anything they could do about the smell. The operator said that the facility was full and that she couldn't give me a different room, but offered to send the cleaning staff to the room with some "spray." I thought this was a feeble attempt at best, but even so, I never saw a member of the cleaning staff to supply this "spray."
This particular weekend, even though this is early October, the Virginia Beach area had somewhat warm and humid weather and the A/C unit in the room was doing a poor job of keeping the room bearable. It remained stuffy for most of my stay.
The TV set's remote didn't work correctly. The volume had to be controlled on the TV set.
Finally, this establishment is one that has outdoor entrances to the rooms. Under ordinary circumstances, this is not a bad thing, but the lock on the door was malfunctioning and I had to force the latch back into the door so that the door could be shut and locked. It was at this point of frustration that my traveling companion actually called the place a "dump." Surely not all Red Roof Inns are in as poor shape as this one.
