Soft Beds, Convenient to all Sorts of Touristy Stuff

  • November 19, 2008

We found the Marriott Harbourside after some fun with the GPS and delayed instructions, and were delighted (and relieved we made it in one piece). I found this hotel via Priceline for $75 a night, and it was great. The lobby was clean and beautiful; it was right on the water, next to great little touristy shops and restaurants. The rooms were spacious, and oh, the beds were so heavenly soft and comfy. Especially after the monk-like pallets of the night before. Bliss!

They couldn’t fit the big truck in their normal parking garage, so we were asked to park in the receiving area. Odd that, you wouldn’t think a pickup truck too tall, but there it was. Perhaps they haven’t yet caught on to America’s love affair with SUVs in Canada. Or, at least in Nova Scotia.

We settled into our rooms, and picked a place for lunch from the information left in our rooms by the hotel. I finally got a ‘local’ place, at my insistence, but mainly because it was within walking distance. We really didn’t want to venture out with the car again if we didn’t have to, as the hotel is on a one-way access street, and difficult to find again.

Great Stay

Great location with easy access to waterfront points of interest. Parking is extra. Would recommend booking option with breakfast included; otherwise it is a bit pricey.

Marriott Halifax Harbourfront

Marriott Halifax Harbourfront

A top notch Marriott hotel with a classy location on Halifax Harbour a few steps from all sorts of entertainment, restaurants, museums and pubs. You really will enjoy this hotel. My room was large and even had windows that opened for fresh air. Our meeting facilities were wonderful and the food above average for large banquets. The hospitality is incredible. I really felt at home.

Why book a Marriott? You get a reliable product at a fair price. My room included a very comfortable bed, executive computer desk and chair, a large flat screen television and more.

The staff is kind and helpful. I was able to get all my questions answered. Maps and other visitor information was easily obtained. My room even had a magazine rack loaded with information.

We had beautiful rooms for our meetings and receptions including a beautiful ballroom with a fantastic harbour view suitable for a wedding.

This hotel accepts the typical list of American credit cards including American Express at a reasonable rate of exchange. Although there is a cash machine in the hotel and another one a few steps down the street for easy access to Canadian dollars, you could get along on your credit cards in the hotel.

This hotel pours Starbucks coffee. As I prefer the milder and cheaper Tim Horton's coffee, I was able to trot out of the hotel and get my Tim Horton's coffee in about 10 minutes.

Indoor pool and full gym equipment for guests and parking at rates typical of Halifax for cars. Public transportation near by including the Harbour ferries. This hotel is connected to the weatherproof pedway system. You can get to the casino, shopping and many restaurants without risking the weather. Maps available for the asking.

This hotel is now my first choice for a return visit to Halifax!

Great Service, Rooms and Location

I have stayed at the Marriot once since it's been owned by this company and one other time when it was the Casino Hotel. There are up to 6 floors though most of the rooms are on 2-5. There are junior and full size suites as well as king bedded rooms or rooms with two beds. The decor is very nice and as of 2008, they have been refurbishing, a section at a time. The rates were average, about $130 - $175 for a king room depending on time of year and special offers. The bathrooms have toiletries and lovely towels and lots of hot water. There is a flat screen television with webTv access for a cost. They also provide data jacks for high speed internet in the rooms.

The hotel is connected to quite a lot of the downtown office towers by overhead walkway which is convenient if you are there on business. Casino Nova Scotia is also accessible via the walkways. The hotel is right on the harbour so you can request rooms with a water front view. I was part of an organizing committee for an event we held here and the staff couldn't have been more helpful with our needs.

There's a great spa, Interlude, in the hotel as well as a fitness center and indoor pool. The restaurant, 44 North, serves amazing buffet breakfasts and their dining room menu is very good. The pub on site is also very good with a smaller menu.

It isn't a budget hotel but it's not unreasonable and well worth staying here for the location alone. Historic Properties spreads out along the harbour from here and you are only a short stagger away from lots of great pubs and restaurants in the area.

The little touches were missing.

A basic free continental breakfast in that we've found in most hotels was missing; no ice bucket nor a small refridgerator to keep a couple drinks cold. These are amenities we've become accustomed as we travel. They boasted of the free web browser in the room (WebTV), but anything beyond basic news and weather was an extra fee. There was ample closet space, but only 3 small drawers in the entertainment center for our clothes. We were not thrilled with a $* a day fee to park our car in their parking garage. All in all this hotel sparkled visually, but just didn't offer the comforts that we like to have when we travel. (The staff was really nice, though.)
