great stay

the hotel was so close to ocean and nice beaches, rooms were a little small but who needs all the extras when all you need is a good bed. we had a few problems with our keys to doors, sometimes they worked and sometimes we could not get in our rooms. but the front desk had no problem to stop what they were doing and go fix the problem themselves. front desk employees very nice. they need more locations for ice and vending, only one spot for both.

Hotel is quaint, little walkways with patios, looks and feels european. Rooms were very clean, just a few blocks from great beach and little beach town with shops. Very good value for the money!

Beach/Sea World Trip

We needed a reasonably priced place close to the beach and Sea World with a room large enough for 4 adults and a five year old. We were delighted with our room, close to 300 square feet with a jacuzzi with and two queen sized beds. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. There was ample closet space but the bathroom was a bit small but adequate. One of the features of the motel that we enjoyed was a common sitting area outside of our room where we could sit and drink a beer or our morning coffee.. The breakfast was decent featuring cinnamon buns delivered daily by a local bakery. The beach is close but does require a hike. We were 45 easy minutes from Sea World and 30 minutes from Joe's Crab Shack. Also, there are some nice places to eat close to the motel including a great little Taco stand and a magnificent coffee/breakfast place both within walking distance. Some might say parking was a bit of a challenge since the spaces are beneath the building and have support poles between them. That said, all vehicles are in the shade and secure during the night. One of the drawbacks for people with children would be the lack of a large pool. They do have a very nice spa that is clean and well maintained that we enjoyed with our 5 year old but it did not afford the fun of a large pool. The management was friendly and attentive to our needs.

I stayed for an after Christmas and New Years Eve get together with my friends. Our stay at the Portofino was better then expected, especially for the money.. The rooms were clean, spacious and well appointed. The real plus, was the short walk to town and the most beautiful beach. We understood that they were going through some renovations, but the staff more then made up for any minor inconvenience's. We are looking forward to summer, for our return trip. MH

We had evacuation orders during the recent Fires in San Diego and this was one of the few places where discounted rates for evacuees were offered. The staff was very helpful and concerned about our home and area. They kept us updated throughout the 2 tense days of the situation. The rooms were fairly priced for their convenient amenities and cozy beds. The staff was so helpful that they bought fruits and milk for the guests since their regular deliveries didn't make it the previous night due to the fires.
