We stayed at the Best Western Long Beach the night before our cruise. The worst thing was that when we called from the airport to get a pick-up to the hotel it was after 5 pm and they said that the van driver got off at 5:00 so we would have to take a taxi. They don't tell you that up front. It cost $20.00 for the taxi. The hotel itself is a little old and quite basic but the beds were comfortable and clean. Basic 2-3 star motel. We took the rail line (right out side the front door) and it's only $1.25 per way which was reasonable. We went to the end of the line where the convention center is and lots of good restaurants (Famous Dave's, PF Chang's, Chili's etc.) It is a nicer area and was fun. The neighborhood around the hotel is kinda slummy but we didn't spend any time there. They did take us to the cruise terminal in the morning at check out time which was one of the reasons we stayed there. The continental breakfast is basic but okay.

Stayed one night during LA trip. Front desk let us check in at 11:30am to a clean , comfortable room. Free Morning breakfast typical with a favorite of mine, boiled eggs. An employee continuously keep the food stocked and coffee fresh. Metro is 40 steps from the front door. Neighborhood reviews seemed worrysome, but we did not walk beyond the street out front so seemed OK to me.

FYI, this hotel is in the middle of the ghetto.... This is a great place to stay the night before your cruise out of the Port of Long Beach, but DO NOT stay here unless you plan on never leaving the hotel. We walked across the street to McDonalds a couple of times, and each time thought we were going to get mugged. The hotel advertised 100% smoke free rooms, but it was obvious that people had been smoking in our room. Spend the extra money and stay at the Port. Even better, fly into LAX and stay at a hotel around there. Avoid the Long Beach area at all costs.

Although many have written about the location of this hotel, we did not have any problems at all. The neighborhood is ethnic but we did not feel unsafe. The Metro Blue Line is right in front of the hotel and made it very easy for us to get around. We even took the Metro to Universal City Walk. The all day pass only cost us $1.80 for seniors (we're not that old) but we did qualify for it. The Cuban restaurant just a block away from the hotel was good and we did get a pizza from Pizza Hut the 1st night when we arrived late. Our room was clean and recently renovated. Breakfast was ok with cereal/rolls/waffles/fruit. Enough to get you going for the day. What a nice advantage to be able to get a free shuttle to the pier on Sunday for our cruise. All in all, we enjoyed the 3 nights we stayed at the Best Western Long Beach and if you are just there to sightsee, it is a good place to stay for the price. Also, we took an all day tour of Los Angeles with Sunseeker Tours and that was well worth it. If you are looking for luxury, this isn't the place, but if you are looking for a convenient location, a good room, a helpful staff, a decent breakfast and a free ride to the pier for your cruise then you will be happy here.
