Our experience at the Allegro Hotel in Chicago

  • August 1, 2008
  • Rated 3 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
Location is excellent, convenient walking distance to Lake front, surrounded by shopping & resturants. Decor is eclectic/chic, furnishings were contemporary, interesting mix, very clean. Our bathroom was very small, barely large enough for two people at one time, but functional,; electrical outlets were on the side of the desk, not on the walls-we had to call front desk to find out where they were. Staff were friendly, efficient, and quick to respond to needs. , Service was great, friendly, fast.

Good Stay, Some Minor Issues

  • May 3, 2008
  • Rated 3 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
Overall, a good stay. This hotel is especially good for the price, but does not quite live up to its own image. This is a trendy, chic place that in some ways is more appearance than substance and seems to overlook some conveniences. While it is a charming, old building right in the middle of downtown (GREAT location), my room is a bit small and stuffy. The bathroom focuses more on designer, art deco fixtures than on convenience (with minimal counter space, a tiny sink, and a basic shower. Also, while there is soap, shampoo, etc., other BASIC things found in a 3-4 star room (e.g., mouthwash) are available upon request or for separate purchase. Despite these minor issues, the staff is helpful, the restaurant is pleasant, and I would stay again.

They're trying, but it's not enough

The doorman & valet people are terrific. The lobby is a retro style & has a different, but fresh, clean, feel with many young professionals milling about during happy hour. Management offers free drinks for an hour each night for guests & it is very popular. We were greeted with a very snippy front desk agent until a very pleasant manager stepped in. The rooms are probably the smallest I've ever stayed in. They are nice, but there is NO extra space! And the bathroom....dear heaven! Don't sneeze, you'll smack your forehead on a wall. The best thing I can say is the restaurant "212" is outstanding! It's a don't miss. If you're a small party, do like we did, sit at the kitchen's bar & watch the action! The chef is amazing..they all are really & you might even get free tastes (we did).

Museum Trip

  • July 31, 2007
  • Rated 4 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
My son and I stayed at Hotel Allegro during a trip to Chicago to visit the museums. The hotel is lovely, and while the rooms may be small, compared to a chain hotel, they have alot of charm. The beds were extremely comfortable with down comforters and pillows. A laptop safe was provided for no charge for my son's computer. We had free internet wireless and never had trouble connecting. There was a bit of trouble with housekeeping being unresponsive, but the manager handled it quickly and to my satisfaction. I would definitely stay here again.

Terrible Experience from check-in to check-out

Let me start by saying that I'm usually very easy to please when it comes to hotels. As long as it's clean, safe, and there aren't any unforeseen problems, I always leave happy. Having said that, words can't do justice to my dissatisfaction with this hotel, but let me try: 1) I reserved a room for 6 nights. When I arrived to check in after a long flight, I was shocked to hear that my room had been given away. 2) I was placed in a different room which was so incredibly noisy that I had to change rooms. I was put in a smoking room temporarily, and this was the smoking room to end all smoking rooms. I would've been better off sleeping in an ashtray. 3) Upon hearing my dissatisfaction with the noisy room and sebsequent smoking room, the staff was not the least bit apologetic. 4) MY CREDIT CARD WAS CHARGED OVER $11,000 BY THE HOTEL. This was ten times the rate, and it required a great deal of effort on my part to get the situation resolved. 5) Upon hearing about the incorrect $11,000+ charge to my credit card, the staff, again, was not the least bit apologetic. 6) The bath tubs in all three rooms were covered by a plastic shell (have you seen the commercials for Bath Fitters..."We're the perfect fit"?) which was too tight to touch the bottom of the original tub. This made it feel like I was balancing on a hammock while showering. I'm in my late 20's and in good shape, but I still found it incredibly difficult to balance on this surface. If I had been staying with an elderly person, I would've checked out immediately because of safety concerns. The only redeeming qualities were the location, the helpful concierge, and the free wine reception.
