Some Good, Some Bad at the Hotel Allegro

At first glance, the Hotel Allegro is definitely trendy and quirky. Very interesting décor in the main lobby and rooms. It was a little odd that there were complimentary leopard print pj’s in the closet and a big ol’ mirror at the end of the bed (bom-chicka-bow-wow), but there wasn’t anything else risqué.

The building and rooms have recently been refurbished, so that was nice. Some reviews we had seen said it there was potential noise issues, but we were fine.

Our concierge contact was incredibly helpful/insightful. Hooked us up with several reservations at good restaurants, gave us plenty of clear directions on the closest movie theater/museum/and other points of interest, and got us onto a boat architectural of the city that we should have booked ourselves long before our arrival. So, point being, concierge = good.

The only real negatives came at check out time. There was an extra, but not immediately eye-catching charge on our bill that we saw after check-out (unscrupulous hotels will often try to get that by guests who more often than note don’t go over their bill with a fine tooth comb). We should have done a walk around check of our car before leaving after the valet brought it out because there was a quarter tank of gas missing (we hadn't driven at all during our stay in the city) and all of our radio presets had been changed to latin music channels.

The location was alright if youre going for shopping on the magnificent mile. Not absurdly convenient, but alright if you strategically plan when to drop off shopping bags ;). You just have to walk a couple blocks and over a bridge to get to the heart of things.

Decent price for Chicago. However, a little more probably would have gotten us a wait-staff and valet service that were on lock-down for correct behavior.

Our experience at the Allegro Hotel in Chicago

Location is excellent, convenient walking distance to Lake front, surrounded by shopping & resturants. Decor is eclectic/chic, furnishings were contemporary, interesting mix, very clean. Our bathroom was very small, barely large enough for two people at one time, but functional,; electrical outlets were on the side of the desk, not on the walls-we had to call front desk to find out where they were. Staff were friendly, efficient, and quick to respond to needs. , Service was great, friendly, fast.

Good Stay, Some Minor Issues

Overall, a good stay. This hotel is especially good for the price, but does not quite live up to its own image. This is a trendy, chic place that in some ways is more appearance than substance and seems to overlook some conveniences. While it is a charming, old building right in the middle of downtown (GREAT location), my room is a bit small and stuffy. The bathroom focuses more on designer, art deco fixtures than on convenience (with minimal counter space, a tiny sink, and a basic shower. Also, while there is soap, shampoo, etc., other BASIC things found in a 3-4 star room (e.g., mouthwash) are available upon request or for separate purchase. Despite these minor issues, the staff is helpful, the restaurant is pleasant, and I would stay again.

They're trying, but it's not enough

The doorman & valet people are terrific. The lobby is a retro style & has a different, but fresh, clean, feel with many young professionals milling about during happy hour. Management offers free drinks for an hour each night for guests & it is very popular. We were greeted with a very snippy front desk agent until a very pleasant manager stepped in. The rooms are probably the smallest I've ever stayed in. They are nice, but there is NO extra space! And the bathroom....dear heaven! Don't sneeze, you'll smack your forehead on a wall. The best thing I can say is the restaurant "212" is outstanding! It's a don't miss. If you're a small party, do like we did, sit at the kitchen's bar & watch the action! The chef is amazing..they all are really & you might even get free tastes (we did).

Museum Trip

My son and I stayed at Hotel Allegro during a trip to Chicago to visit the museums. The hotel is lovely, and while the rooms may be small, compared to a chain hotel, they have alot of charm. The beds were extremely comfortable with down comforters and pillows. A laptop safe was provided for no charge for my son's computer. We had free internet wireless and never had trouble connecting. There was a bit of trouble with housekeeping being unresponsive, but the manager handled it quickly and to my satisfaction. I would definitely stay here again.
