there are too many nice hotels in chicago to stay at the palmer house. the lobby is nice, but most everything to do with the rooms and service related to them is unacceptable for a hotel in this price range. i stayed there years ago and had fond memories. it is now a convention oriented hotel with no amenities...no coffee pot in room, no mouthwash, nothing extra of any kind.
the housekeeping is the strangest thing. apparently by design, the maids start opening doors at 8:30 to clean, without any reason to believe the people have left. this happenened for three days, in both rooms i rented. they do not even knock. the beds are hard. the bottom sheet is not fitted and is not big enough to stay in place.
i have stayed in two other hotels in chicago in the past month, in this price range, and the palmer house was so far beneath the quality of the others it is astonishing.

Best place in Chicago for the money. However, we were disappointed that there was no in-room mini-bar or coffee available. Also, the pool was closed due to renovation and the kids were not able to swim. We would stay again, however, the family opted to vote for another hotel next time around.

This was our 2nd stay here. Overall it is a great value. The rooms are refurbished and updated. The location is very convenient for travel throughout the city. Everything is within walking distance. We would stay here again.

My husband and I are historical architecture buffs, so we were apprehensive about taking our two young children to the Palmer House Hilton. We were afraid it would be too old-fashioned for kids and we'd read many bad reviews about the hotel's service. We decided to persist with our plans since we'd already made our reservations based on the hotel's history and locality. We were ELATED by the service, location, amenities, and grandeur of the hotel. Our room was ready at 9:00 am (as frequent travelers, we know that's almost unheard of) upon our arrival and the service desk associates and concierge were exceedingly helpful and courteous. The lobby was breathtaking; with many dining and entertaining options (we didn't partake of these facilities with two young children, but multiple business conventions, salsa dancing, and a huge wedding were taking place in the ballrooms while we were there). The rooms were large and luxurious, although the "queen" beds seemed like full-sized beds. The linens and comforters were plush and I had the best night's sleep ever! The bathrooms, although small, were tiled and had a deep tub and strong water pressure in the shower. We received Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries and abundant towels each day. The attention to detail was incredible, even the door knobs and elevators were elaborate! Although construction and conventions were happening, the hotel was quiet and restful. My only regret was the pool was closed for renovation. I can't wait to return to the Palmer House again.
