Weekend Getaway

  • January 18, 2007
  • Rated 4 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
I remembered that the property was nicely decorated for the holiday season and it was very peaceful & quiet overall. I've only eaten breakfast twice and really enjoyed the breakfast buffet and it was worth the price. I experienced great service. The room size was perfect for me and overall, I would recommend this place for a weekend retreat. Next time I'll try the spa services and take golf lessons prior to going there again.

A place to relax

I've really enjoyed the resort for the space and friendly, family atmosphere it promotes. A few of the guests made great comments of the spa treatment, hiking trails, food, staff, and they didn't have to leave their pets behind. As a referring travel agent, I would definitely recommend this place as a great weekend getaway.

Lovely retreat!

Beautiful hotel and breathtaking location! Quiet during the week. Lots of children and families on weekends make the facilities a little loud, but it never felt crowded even for a summer weekend. The pool is great. Lake is beautiful! Lots of activities, boating.Beds could have been a bit more comfortable (wish they had King beds in Deluxe rooms). Great view from our room.Restaurants a bit pricey, service good but a little slow. Staff very friendly!!I want to go back!!

Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort

Hidden off of Highway 40 between Cumberland and Flintstone, you come upon this beautiful building surrounded by a golf course and next to a park. When you enter the lodge, you first notice the warm wood beams and the enormous windows with the lake scenery. A fireplace is going, surrounded by lots of cozy chairs.

The room was equally as cozy. The custom-made Shaker furniture goes perfectly with the environment. Even the plaid bedspread fit in with the whole "lodge" feel. There were the standard amenities of a hotel like a Marriott, with a coffeemaker and minibar. There wasn’t anything fancy with the room, and it wasn’t large but wasn’t small.

The hotel has two restaurants, but being that I was there in December, only one of them was open. I had a delicious mozzarella, tomato, and asparagus appetizer. It was served with wonderful warm rolls. The prices were very reasonable. I ventured to the pool, where I saw an outdoor/indoor pool and small, sparse gym. The lodge does have a full-service spa offering a range of services that seemed a bit pricey. There is even a spa representative in the lobby ready to book your services.

The lodge has a gift shop and offers numerous activities, like golf, fishing, hiking, etc. You could probably do anything there. Because of the holiday, the park next door had an enormous display of lights. You could drive through the park with your children to see everything. Also, because it was December, the lodge was pretty quiet. That was fine by me. I did find that the price on their website was double their actual room price. I didn’t mention it at check-in, but they offered me their lower price right away.

This would definitely be a place to check out in warmer weather just to have a few days of outdoor fun. But the peacefulness of the winter was wonderful just the same.
