Needs better management

Hotel office did not open until 8 am. No one actually showed up until 8:25 am. Heat was on all night in our unit and others. Had to keep the fan on and keep windows open since no one could turn it off. Only price and proximity to UC Berkeley were worthwhile.

Golden Bear, Americas Best Value Inn Berkeley

I wasn't expecting this hotel to be great, but it was actually fabulous! I typically travel in high style, but chose this one because of it's closeness to the classes I was attending. I will definitely stay here again when I return. The room was clean and comfortable, had a little refrigerator and microwave, a wonderful FAN mounted in the corner of the room (which, along with the cool California air, made sleeping quite comfy, and drowned out any noise). Parking was great - right outside my door. The motel is right in the middle of an area that is filled with restaurants (including a great cafe across the street that is open for breakfast and lunch). I will be returning to the area at least once a year, and I plan on returning to this hotel - GREAT value, friendly service, clean and convenient... even has a gas station across the street for refilling the rental car! A+ in my book!!!!

Clean, friendly, but a bit rustic

Rustic or funky is my best description of this hotel. First, let me tell you that the staff are friendly and sincere. However, the accommodations were surprisingly wanting. There is no air conditioning, a fact that is not pointed out anywhere in any ratings or descriptions. In the San Francisco area, this may not usually be an issue, but it was on our July visit. The bathroom smelled very strongly of mildew, and I would not have been able to stay there more than just a few nights. Perhaps other rooms do not have this problem. It was hard to complain about the cleanliness of the room/hotel and the comfort of the beds. They were superb! I was concerned about theft (as always with any hotel), but these folks are honest. I recommend it to someone who is not worried about amenities but wants a safe, low-cost place to stay in Berkeley. The wireless internet worked seamlessly, for this this I give them an outstanding rating.

This hotel offers the essentials and a great staff. It's probably not the best place to stay for more than a couple of days because the traffic can get loud at night, but if youre just visiting the area, it offers affordable and safe accomodations. The rooms are much more sparse than they are depicted in the photos, but they are clean and neat.

Plan to Return

I found the Golden Bear Inn to be a satisfactory place to stay in Berkeley. It was affordable, clean, safe, and centrally located. The room was a bit worn but updates were being made, i.e. the showers. The carpets need work next. It is on a major bus line and less than 15 minutes away from the N. Berkeley BART station. After seeing the location of other hotels in the area (University Ave and Shattuck), I was glad I chose the GBI. I was traveling by myself and returned late in the evening to my room. I felt safe walking to and from the hotel.
