we had a very pleasant stay at the avalon hotel. located in the heart of Erie, walking distance to many taverns, restaurants. the only interaction we had with the management was checking in and out, but all were pleasant and accomodating. room was clean and comfortable. when (not if) we go back we will stay here again.

Do not stay at this hotel!

We arrived and were greeted by less than enthusiastic staff. We were checked in and barely spoken to. We went to our room, opened the door to a terrible smell, unmade beds and dirty dishes from room service all over the room. We went right back to the front desk and told them about the status of the room, there was barely an apology made, they told us they didn't know how the computer would have let them check us in to a dirty room! They did give us another room, this one was what they called clean, but I did not! Rooms are very small, beds small, we had reserved a double room for four, two adults, two children. There were only two pillows per double bed, only three towels, no washclothes at all. Wallpaper peeling off walls, what appeared to be mold/mildew on ceiling in bathroom and it was definitely on the bottom of the shower curtain. Airconditioner/heater did not appear to function properly, when we finally got it to turn on, the fan was very, very loud, couldn't sleep! Windows paper thin with extremely old wood window sills, was afraid to let kids anywhere need them. You could here everything through them, including all the local late night bar crowd, every vehicle, etc., needless to say we got very little sleep that night. We left first thing in the morning, very early and cancelled our second night reservation. I would not stay there another night! The weekend we stayed was a very busy one for this area due to a local soccer tournament and we arrived late evening and could not make other arrangements that late or we would have! I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and it was not a cheap stay either!

Bad Experience

I stayed in this hotel because of a wedding reception that was in the hotel ballroom and they were offering a DISCOUNTED rate for the people attending the wedding. their discounted rate for the following: 1) a broken TV remote - it took the front desk 4 hours to replace 2) an iron board with numerous stains all over it - unusable 3) a toliet seat that did not fit the toliet 4) wallpaper coming off the walls 5) an extremely filthly shower curtain 6) the room door was extremely aged, damaged, and would not close all the way without force 7) no trim along the baseboards If I were going to Motel 6 I would expect these types of things, but not from a place like this. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere.

Do be fooled!

The room pictures were a lot nicer than the room actually was. we got called in the morning by the housekeeping staff even though I had a "do not disturb" sign on the door, to come into my room because the previous guests left there clothes in a drawer. My other complaint was that I called the hotel when reservations were made about parking and handicap accessibility. Whoiever I talked to said they had both, the parking is underground. When I parked my vehicle and went to the elevator, I had to pull my daughter's wheelchair up about 6 or 7 steps. The elevators are kind of small for wheelchair bound people also.

We chose the Avalon because of its proximity to the Erie Civic Center. We wanted a hotel that would allow us to walk to the concert. The front desk staff was professional and helpful. Our room was clean but a little tatty. Grouting around the bathtub and in the corners of the bathroom were in need of cleaning. Part of the curtains had fallen from the rod and were hanging. The heating unit was not adequate to heat the room when the temperature is 23 degrees outside. The bed was comfortable and we were pleased that there were two chairs in the room (although the chairs didn't match). We had dinner on Thursday evening prior to the concert. The service was very slow because there was only one waitress for the entire dining room. The bar tender helped her out when he could. Three of us ordered the beer battered shrimp and were disappointed with the meal. The shrimp was overly breaded. The twice baked potatoes were cold. One guest had the white pizza and enjoyed it. While packing up to go home on Friday we discovered a prior guest's socks under the bed. The free parking is a big plus. But for its location, we would not recommend this hotel.
