Works for me

The Avalon is a perfectly satisfactory smaller Manhattan hotel, based on the four or five I've stayed in. Not luxurious, but the room was fine, the lobby adequate, and the service was good. Everything in Manhattan is too expensive, compared to even three years ago, but this was much cheaper than the "special conference rate" I was offered at a hotel a couple of blocks away for the meeting I attended. The location is central for pretty much anything Midtown.

"No Marriott points, but well worth it"

As someone who has travelled a lot for her job and has seen quite a few upscale hotels, I was very pleased by this boutique hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was comfortable, clean and quiet, and the location was great. Added bonus: computer with free internet in lobby.

Needs work

Booked a suite with two beds, got a single queen bed. Upgraded at n/c (thankfully because the room was by the freight elevator) when the tub plumbing broke immediately. Poor internet access, no written hotel information (brochure being "reprinted"), and the web site is incomplete or misleading. No breakfast available for my rate (no option to have requested that). Front desk didn't answer phone on repeated times. Nice linens, firm bed.firm. Very hot room; temperature couldn't be controlled. However, might book again at the right rate, knowing in advance the limitations (location).

The location of this hotel and the size and quality of our room was great. Housekeeping staff were very accomodating, front desk staff are in need of serious customer service training. Must eat at Phou 33, great food and service..

Do not stay here!

Went for a weekend getaway to NYC and were not pleased with this hotel! Front desk was very rude and maids did a poor job of cleaning rooms -especially the bathrooms! Upon checkout they informed me that we had a mini bar charge and we don't even drink! I told her that we did not purchase anything from the mini bar and she said that she will take it off our bill but I was still charged on my credit card! Tried for several days after this to contact the manager but he was always conveniently away from his desk or in a meeting. I left him several messages but no return call.
