My husband and I were a little scared to stay here after some of the reviews that we read, but we had a great time. The room was wonderful and very clean. The view from our room was just an alley, but this provided us with a dark and quiet room. We would definitely stay here again.

The room was quiet and clean, as well as spacious and comfortable, esp. by NYC standards. The hotel is conveniently located for sightseeing on E. 32nd between 5th Ave and Madison; it is 2 blks from Empire State Bldg, 9 blks from flatiron bldg, easy walking distance to Grand Central and Times Square etc., and quite close to the subway as well. Each room has a safe, altho we had to ask several times before ours was unlocked for our use. We were able to use the mini bar fridge in the room for storing leftovers, altho the space was limited. Very nice experience overall.

Room smelled musty when we first got there, but was ok once past the door. Room and bath were really clean, though the shower was small. Front desk gal was nice.Oh, the thermostat was coded so we couldn't change it...free internet use was good.

This is a great hotel in a super location. The staff were very friendly despite most of them being very close to going on strike. Having talked to the Union guys outside, it appears that the management do not seem to value the staff by giving them a contract. Somewhat like the Thatcherite era!

The Avalon is a perfectly satisfactory smaller Manhattan hotel, based on the four or five I've stayed in. Not luxurious, but the room was fine, the lobby adequate, and the service was good. Everything in Manhattan is too expensive, compared to even three years ago, but this was much cheaper than the "special conference rate" I was offered at a hotel a couple of blocks away for the meeting I attended. The location is central for pretty much anything Midtown.
