One quick night

I only had to be in Fairbanks for one night so I looked for the least expensive hotel. The rooms are basic. Cozy. No late checkout available at least not when I asked. Has a "workout" room which consists of a bike, a treadmill and one piece of resistance training. The complimentary breakfast consisted of fruit salad (from a can), frozen waffles, yogurt, little smokies, and quacker oatmeal. Hey, it's not the ritz but it served its purpose.

Never Again

We thought, with the name Best Western, that we would be OK. This turned out to be a horrible stay... only bearable because all we did was sleep there! We spent the rest of our time out and about! In short, the restaurant service was slow, unfriendly, and the food was horrific. The beds were ok, but the room was outdated and shabby. I had to ask for basics (shampoo, shower gel) and such in our room. I only met one nice employee! She was a cleaning person I happened to meet in the hallway. Everyone else seemed to hate their job or not know what they were doing. Next time I'll ask for my son's recommendation before booking a hotel and traveling 18 hours by plane and car to see him!

Hotel of Last Resort

Fairbanks hotels can be very busy at this time of the year and this is why I would consider this a "Hotel of Last Resort" when you can't find anything better at a reasonable price. The rooms are spacious enough but the hotel is old and poorly managed. Front desk people are often surly, complimentary breakfast is usually meagre but my biggest complaint is the cleanliness problem. Our room had a patina of dust on the flat surfaces, vacuuming was hit or miss and on the last day we were there they replaced our towels but did not make up the room. We got back to the room at around 7 p.m. and I complained to the duty manager who said that they had no room staff at that hour and asked what I wanted. I replied that I wanted the room cleaned and the bed made. We went out to dinner bu they did not clean the room or make the bed.

We found this hotel reasonable in rates, central location, desk staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms clean, bathrooms recently updated, refrigerator in room handy. Ice cream store in lobby excellent. Dining service slow, but food good. Overall a very good experience.
