It has a distinctly European feel; service is personable and informed, without a tinge of snootiness. There is a wine/hors d'oeuvres hour in the evening, and breakfast is served in the morning. The hotel includes a beautiful dark wood bar, the Avalon, which features a monthly Sinatra night (show up in your zoot suit if you want to really enjoy yourself).
The quiet location alone is reason to endorse this jewel, Union Square being as loud as Rome at night (I will not stay there again). But the charm and the prices combine to make the Hotel Majestic my favorite in the city for affordable stays on a frequent basis. Friends I've sent call it "romantic," "our most special place," and "a little bit of Europe close to home."
The marble tubs are wonderful. Not only do you get the standard soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, but Q-tips, cotton balls, and cotton face pads, as well.
It's luxurious without being costly. (Where else can you get a suite with a fireplace for under $200?) Note: not all suites have doors between the bedroom and living area.
I just adore the Hotel Majestic.
