Peabody Hotel

The iconic Peabody, complete with The Duck March, the beautiful lobby, and grand rooms, is a necessary stop for any visitor. The downtown location, finally revived after decades of disrepair, is a great jumping off point to other Memphis attractions. This is the only hotel that can provide either the first-timer or lifelong resident with the Memphis experience.

Atmosphere with old style rooms. You will enjoy downtown Memphis with the proximity to the mighty Mississippi River and the famous ducks. From the moment you enter the elaborate lobby, you will feel the ambience that this historic hotel offers.

One of the grand old hotels of the South, the Peabody had been in a decline for many years until a remodeling in the 1970''s brought back is former splendor. It is beautiful to look at, and fun to stay in. The rooms are very expensive, beginning at $165 for a double. It has three restaurants, a bar, some shops, and the famous parade of ducks. On the downside, it is dangerous to walk outside at night. The parking lot is fenced and guarded.

The Peabody Hotel

No other hotel can compare with The Peabody in Memphis. Others may offer the same splendor and sophistication, but none offer the Peabody's unique blend of true Southern hospitality and sheer elegance.

The Peabody dates to 1925 and is a National Historic landmark. Once you've crossed the entrance threshold, you'll understand why. Many of her fixtures look like they might have come from a 'Gone With the Wind' set.

The overall atmosphere is one of sheer elegance and refinement. Clusters of sitting areas done in rich dark woods, combined with gleaming brass fixtures, creates a warm feel.

Combine that with Italian Renaissance architecture, a huge Travertine Marble fountain, a stained glass skylight, a grand piano and a centrally located lobby bar and you'll begin to get the picture.

Many celebrities are partial to the Peabody and it's been said that if you hang around the lobby's bar, after a while you'll see everybody who is anybody come through the doors.

To that I can attest, for it was at the Peabody's bar I met one of my all-time, okay not 'one of,' but most definitely my favorite actor, Robert Duval. Yes, he is as charming as he seems.

And then there's the famous Peabody ducks, but that's another journal.

Peabody Hotel/Holiday Inn Downtown

Everybody must do the Peabody at least once in their life. It's a genuine five-star hotel filled with Southern hospitality. They will make you feel like royalty. It's expensive so be prepared to pay. The cheapest room runs around $200 a night. It has several restaurants in and around it, but the highlight of the Peabody is its flock of ducks. Every day the flock passes through the lobby to the delight of the guests and onlookers. Hundreds of people gather to watch this tradition.

The Holiday Inn/Downtown is a less expensive option for lodging in downtown Memphis. It's right across the street from the Peabody, but rooms go for about $100 a night (or less if you have discounts). The parking is complementary, they have a restaurant in the basement, and they have nice, clean rooms.
