Very Nice Downtown Hotel

Very Nice Downtown Hotel

I enjoyed my stay at the Hilton Hotel located in the downtown business area of Toronto. I should start with a commercial message regarding Hilton and their support of the association management profession and associations in general. A major sponsor of ASAE, they supported scholarship recipients with an outstanding room rate of $99 (USD). I was most appreciative of their efforts to make this conference more affordable to me, and more importantly, my employer.

The hotel also supported ASAE attendees through a special welcome reception area where wary travelers could enjoy a bottle of freshly squeezed lemonade and a small snack sized Canadian bacon sandwich, that was simply delightful. Each evening they also hosted a reception in a private area of the lobby for attendees to meet and greet after a full day of speakers and seminars.

The hotel has a full service restaurant (Tundra) which is also their in-room dining provider. I was personally not very impressed with their room service or restaurant menus for dinner. Breakfast was the standard affair of eggs, meats and the obligatory eggs benedict (a Canadian creation).

For those who want to dine to impress, there is a Ruth Chris restaurant on the property as well. Beyond my budget, I did not take them up on their premium prime steaks.

The hotel also had a nice swimming pool on the second floor that was mostly outside, but also had a small portion inside for those cold winter visits. There was also a hot tub and full fitness center on the second floor.

As for my room, it was a standard double with very comfortable bedding and pillows. While not "heavenly", it was a great night's sleep. The work area was very well thought out and set up to allow you to work in your room while also watching TV.

The bathroom and amenities were high end, with plenty of space for guests. I was actually pretty surprised at the overall generosity of the accommodations in terms of the spaciousness.

I mentioned the $99/night rate that I had as a scholarship recipient. The hotel's "group rate" for our conference was published as $239/night CDN which would be roughly $195-$200 USD depending on the exact exchange rate of the day. The "rack rate" on their web site was $289/night when I first looked them up a couple of months ago. Catering more to the business traveler, I do not think they worry much about pricing competitively for the tourist trade. With that being said, tourism is still down and deals can be found on web sites like Orbitz and Hotels.com.

The location was ideal for my convention (roughly five blocks from the convention center) so I would suggest it to anyone going to Toronto for a convention or business in the city.

The Toronto Hilton is located on the corner of Richmond and University Ave in downtown Toronto.

The lobby has been updated to reflect Canadian design and style. It's very modern, clean and chic. Try and catch the glass elevators which provide an amazing view of the CN Tower.

Rooms are a very good size with updated furniture and a spa like bathroom. Mini bar is on the expensive side.

The hotel has a great restaurant called Tundra and features Canadian cuisine, wines and fresh ingredients from local farmers. They also serve breakfast in the AM.

Location wise the hotel is ideal for the business traveler and leisure too. Across the street is the new Four Season for The Performing Arts Centre. The hotel is also connected to the PATH system, which is an underground city with over 2000 shops and it covers more than 4 miles. Perfect if it's cold outside. In fact you can walk from the hotel right down to the train station (Union).

The hotel has an indoor/outdoor pool and a good fitness room.

On the top floor is the executive lounge which provides complimentary wine, cheese, drinks, beer, sweets, tea and breakfast too. It's worth the $50 upgrade fee especially if it's two in a room.

The room was located on the 16th floor as was spacious with two comfortable double beds and nice, fresh linen. In addition there was a wardrobe that whilst note huge was provided adequate storage as well as the ever useful iron and ironing board. A large TV provided ample international TV and good 'pay per' movies; the usual Hollywood Blockbuster stuff. There was a well stocked mini bar at reasonable prices and a nice coffee machine with a good range of complimentary hot drinks.

My main complaint about the hotel and room was the fact that it wasn't very well kept. Although the room was not dirty it was a little scruffy around the edges, bit of paint work, etc., and not well dusted each day, etc. The style of the room was modern, light, and airy, and it was well sized but not up to other Hilton Hotels that I have stayed in. The communal areas of the hotel were all very modern and well kept. I have read reviews of this hotel that recommend staying on the executive floor here as the rooms are much nice and I would be tempted to see the difference if I stayed here again (which I would as the overall experience was very good!)

Toronto is quite a large city although it is easily accessible on foot or using the frequent and reasonable subway or tram systems. The hotel is well located in the financial district.

We ate breakfast in the hotel practically every morning in the Tundra Restaurant where there was a cold and hot buffet option or the a la carte menu. We opted for the nice selection of hot ad cold buffet which was priced 14 Canadian Dollars for the cold (£7 approx) and 19 Dollars for the hot (£8.50 approx) which represented excellent blue for the quality and choice of food and beverages on offer including nice selection of meats, cheeses, fruits, sausage, bacon, etc! The waiting staff were very efficient although you did always have to check they charged you for what you were eating as they were good at charging for hot food when you had only eaten the cold!

The menu in Tundra for lunch and dinner appeared to be quite a wide, international choice with a good range of local Canadian specialties although we didn't dine here at night with lots of other choices round about.

The hotel features two bars, one in the Tundra restaurant and the Barrister's bar (bar food also sold here which looked popular!).

Located on the conference level (one lower than the lobby) was the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. This is a US chain of steak restaurant that truly was one the best places I have ever eaten in and the best fillet steak ever! The food is to die for with sizzling steaks served on hot plates at your table (over 1800 degrees!)

"What a great time we had at the Hilton Toronto. Staff were amazing from the moment we arrived to the second we left. We were on the Executive level of the hotel which is second only to the CN Tower for best views. Also, there is a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in the hotel... what a fabulous meal! This was by far the most relaxing weekend we've had away in a long time!"
