I like a good hotel, and this one is probably the nicest I've ever stayed in. It is priced accordingly. The Auckland Hilton is located at the end of Princess Wharf and has been decorated and designed with a Zen aesthetic throughout. Simple and modern, with luxury at every turn.
Each east-facing room has a private balcony, with teak deck chairs and table, looking out at downtown Auckland, the Bay of Islands, and many, many sailboats. Everything not made of New Zealand hardwoods is white, from the cushy down comforter to the spotless (and huge!) bathroom. I particularly enjoyed the super-deep bathtub with jets and a bath pillow.
The hotel restaurant is named White (duh) and is one of the best places to eat in the city. The hotel bar is a vodka/martini spot. The lobby boasts a 20-foot waterfall trickling down a slate wall, views in every direction, and an extremely accommodating staff. This place is pure luxury if you are willing to spend the money. After my 14-hour flight, I was more than happy to hand over the Visa card.
