Cute hotel, not so cute location

I definitely enjoyed my stay at Hotel O. The lobby decor is artsy and fun, but the room decor is just the same as any standard price hotel. The staff was extremely friendly, they always had a smile and were very helpful. Everything in my room worked well, the room was huge, the beds were comfortable, everything was clean, the view was amazing. My only complaints are the unsupervised parking at $14 and the location. Although it is only about three blocks to the French Quarter, those three blocks make all the difference. As someone who normally walks through all of New Orleans with no problem, this was the first time I considered taking a taxi. I didn't even want to wait for the trolley because of the way the locals were acting around the hotel. This area is not a good one. If the entire hotel were to pick up and move four blocks closer to the Quarter, I would stay there every time. This is a great place to stay!

Long Walk from anything

They managed to place in New Orleans where nothing happens. Quite an achievement! While some of the staff were knowledgable and helpful, some of the staff could not even recommend a local resterant & were not even able to provide a channel guide for the TV. The promised exercize room was under construction. The breakfast was a cold meal except on one day of our stay. There are better places to stay in New Orleans.

Run-down property with little to recommend it to anyone

The Hotel O (formerly Amerihost) at 1300 Canal Street is not worth even $50/night. I wouldn't stay here again, and I don't recommend it to anyone else. General: The décor is in a state of decay and the overall feel of the place is one of slap-dash mediocrity. Little things annoy constantly, like missing lightbulbs, broken trim, an ineffectual air conditioner (perhaps not so little a thing, given the humidity), crumbling plaster, and peeling paint. The free continental breakfast was of Super 8 motel quality. Room: The ceiling fan over the bed was nice, as were the refrigerator, microwave, iron and ironing board, coffee pot, and hair dryer. The in-room Wi-fi is free and fast, but the connection is weak. My mattress was lumpy and my pillows thin. Staff: The staff was unfailingly polite, friendly, and helpful. I can't decide whether the presence of an armed security guard in the lobby at night was reassuring or not. Location: Just outside the French Quarter. Depressed neighborhood, with an urban grittiness that some travelers might find unsettling. There are no restaurants or other amenities nearby, unless one counts a Walgreens, a Chinese restaurant I wouldn't eat in on a bet, and a McDonalds. Summary: I'm a budget traveler, in New Orleans for a conference. The nearest thing I can compare this hotel to is a 16-story Super 8 that's been neglected for a while. Colleagues in town for the same conference found much nicer places for the same price or less, and I see that the rates have come down a lot overall since I booked. Personally, I recommend giving the Hotel O a pass.
