Good Location, bad view

Good location if you dont wander the wrong way out of the front door, turns into a very seedy part of town. 2 of the desk clerks were very rude, but two were great. so its a wash there. The room I had looked out about 20 feet away into the window of another room. I asked for a change in rooms and was told nothing available, but went back later and the lady was more than willing to find me one. If you need reliable internet, however, DO NOT stay here, or if you need to make phone calls, there is a charge, even for 800 numbers. Make sure you specify a room with a view, It is a U shaped setup and you might look out a window into someone elses room and all the pigeon droppings

Historical Barbary Coast

A beautiful historic building, excellent staff with a Starbucks in the loby. didn't care for the hotel resturant, pricey an d poor quality and portion. Somewhat noisy being right on Broadwayfor super people watching, super easy connections for transportation to Union Square and some of the best resturants in San Fran as well as Fisherman's Warf. We will stay there again even though it is a bit noisy and could use some touch up here and there.

Whitcomb Hotel

This hotel is rated as 3 stars, but I would probably give it 2 stars. The bed which is the most important thing to me was very comfortable. The bathroom was very small, but had an updated marble shower. Paint was chipping off the wall and the heavy curtains did not close all the way. The floors creaked as this was a very old hotel. All transportation was very close. The bart and muni are right outside the doors. We spent 30.00 each on transportation for 3 days. Of course we walked quite a bit. For the price, I would probably stay here again.

Great San Francisco experience

Hotel was beautiful, listed as a national historic site, vaulted ceilings, glass chandeliers and marble columns, right on the bus line and 3 blocks from cable car. Room was exceptional, but no toilet paper. Called front desk, but no response, so we had to use tissues. Beds were comfortable and nice view at night of the lighted dome(City Hall?). Desk and bellhops were friendly, as was the car parking attendants. Starbucks in the lobby was convenient as they were open at 5am. Will definately stay again

Needs an upgrade

We recently did a whirlwind tour of four different destinations, the Hotel Whitcomb was sandwiched in between two other hotels. It didn't even come close to the others, while being by far the most expensive. Our other destinations were in the high end also when it came to cost, so we were comparing apples to apples. We were excited about the history of the hotel, but did not expect it to SMELL like the history. The old smell was very overwhelming, there has to be some kind of way to make the rooms smell less old! I will say that the beds were very comfortable! I just think that a few upgrades to the rooms could go a long way. The location of the hotel was very convenient to everything we wanted to see. We were able to walk to many of our destinations or we just grabbed a trolley car to further destinations.
