Pleasant Stay

Picked Park South hotel based on a friend's recommendation and online reviews. Was traveling with friend (left our husbands at home). The block the hotel is on was quiet at night, no problem with street noise from our 5th floor room. Felt safe enough, but there wasn't always a doorman. Hotel likewise was quiet. There's a McDonalds on corner, a chain drugstore, a small bagel and sandwich shop and a neighborhood grocery on the other corner, so plenty of options if you need anything quickly. Subway stop is very close, by MdDonalds. No problem getting cabs. It's in the Kip's Bay neighborhood. Desk staff was friendly and helpful. Stored our bags for us after we checked out so that we could sightsee more. Continental breakfast was served in the Black Duck, the hotel's restaurant. Included everything we wanted except cut fruit - cereals, bagels, bread, danish, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, coffee, juice, cold cuts and cheese. The room was small, but not that small by NY standards, I believe. Bathroom was small for two people, but nice. No wifi in room; free access with hotel's Internet jack was slow. Coffee machine and hairdryer in room. Visited in July and hotel's elevators and public restrooms and hallways were not airconditioned and were uncomfortable. When we checked in, they had "upgraded" us to a king size bed - which we didn't want. They didn't have anything else that night, so we shared a bed. Good thing we are old friends! We ended up keeping the room for simplicity, although they were going to move everything for us while we were out. Room service with ice was fast when we called. Only there 2 nights but disappointed they didn't replace soaps and shampoos after first night. Still, we'd both stay there again.

A good location in between uptown and downtown, right near subways in case you're trying to limit the damage to your wallet, friendly service at the hotel, clean, neat but small rooms and a decent continental breakfast. While not cheap by any means, for NYC, it was a good value for our $ spent.
