The Biltmore Hotel

The Biltmore Hotel

One of the sites was the Biltmore Hotel, which is one of the most outstanding buildings in Coral Gables. It was completed in 1926, and has hosted some celebrities in its day, such as Al Capone (who had a speakeasy here), Judy Garland, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The Biltmore served as a military hospital during World War II, when its marble floors were covered in linoleum, and it remained a veteran's hospital until 1968. Following a $55 million restoration in 1986 the hotel went bankrupt in 1990, but then opened its doors two years later. The Biltmore also has the largest hotel swimming pool in the US, and their famous swimming instructor, Johnny Weismuller, known for his role as Tarzan, set a world record there in the 1930's.

Conference and Mini Family Vacation

The hotel is beautiful. We love older hotels because they have more character. The conference room were very nice, but freezing cold. I am never cold and I had to wear a sweater. The grounds are well maintained. The hotel bar is very fun and the locals and bartenders are a blast. My five year old son got special treatment sitting at the bar with us. The pool is huge. It would be nice to have a hot tub and the pool water was very very cold, but I am a child at heart and I have a five year old so it did not phase us, but my husband did not venture in for long. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. It is at least a fifteen minute cab ride to get any where to eat or shop, but that is part of the beauty of the hotel that it is not near anything and set in a very nice residential district. We look forward to going back possibly next year. The rooms were nice sized and had good views.

What a great historical hotel. EVERYTHING is first Class. The Pool is the largest hotel pool (700,000 gallons) in the US. and is great to layout by and be pampered by the many attendants poolside. You have to see the AL Capone Suite on the 13th Floor. Ask for a tour. It is amazing two stories and rents for $* a night. Bullet holes are still in firplace where shoot-out occured. I know, there are lots of hotels in Miami like that but this is NICE.
