Holiday Inn with Class

The Holiday Inn Mills House is a lovely -- and pink! -- hotel centrally located within Charleston's Historic District. The location is excellent, though we didn't find it to be within "walking distance" of many of Charleston's attractions.
The decor and amenities are far superior to most Holiday Inns; the company apparently purchased the hotel long after its establishment. The lobby, the restaurant, the rooms -- all nice. However, we thought the service was somewhat lacking. The bellboy was friendly, but otherwise we found ourselves waiting unnecessarily at times and eventually figuring out some information that could've easily been shared with us by the staff.
Our room on the Executive Level was nicely appointed and had a wonderful view of the town and the water in the distance. The elevator to the Executive Level requires your room key, so there was an added layer of security. Additionally, Executive guests are invited to complementary wine and/or appetizer events every evening. We went on our first night and were disappointed by the slow, somewhat bumbling service and never returned.
In conclusion, I would recommend the Mills House to a friend and probably return there myself, but I would probably search for less expensive hotels within its vicinity first.

Small but elegant

The Mills House is in a wonderful location, close to the historic homes and fab restaurants, as well as great shopping including Saks and specialty boutiques. The rooms, as to be expected in an older property, were small. The bathrooms are tiny however. This was a problem for us as we like to primp. Also, there was no mini bar in the room-they will bring a small refrigerator to your room at no charge. They do provide a nice coffee maker and robes. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The dining room and bar were charming and served good food and drinks but both were a little pricey.

Mills House 6/12

Have stayed at the Mills House a number of times and always enjoy it. Room amenities are fine, but far from "luxury" - the draw of the Mills House is its location and things to do near the hotel, not in the hotel itself. The front desk assigned us a room that was already occupied by an older couple who had been moved from another room because of their complaints about the noise. Other than that hiccup, the check-in, check out was quick and easy. We didn't have the same issues with noise, probably because we had stayed there before and expect a historic, older hotel in the middle of downtown to have some noise on a busy summer weekend. It is difficult to beat the combination of value and location of this hotel in Charleston.

Overated & Overpriced

We stayed four nights in May of 2009. The room was very small for a 5 star hotel. They do not have parking. A city garage is used by valet and they charge $22.00 a day. The city is a tourist trap for taxes. Breakfast in the hotel is $18.00. You can walk less than a block and get a nice breakfast for $7.00, Activities in the city are reasonable and intresting except for the city tax. Hyman's is famous for their seafood and it was great. Expect to stand in the street waiting to be seated. We waited 30 minutes on the street. If we return, we will stay outside the city and only go in to see the sights.

Great Spot!!

Loved the location of this hotel, and thought it was charming! Would definitely return.
