Stayed here the night before taking a cruise, and loved it. This was a return trip for my wife, but the last time was when the Ship was in route between New York and London about 60 years ago. The room was almost entirely original, with all the richness from a time when travel was an adventure. There was a little mustiness about the room, but it is on the water and 70 years old. It was more than offset by the great bed and the absolutly top notch service. The cafe catered to us like it was 4 stars. We will be back!!!

The Queen Mary

I stayed on the Queen Mary recently while attending a conference on-board.

The Queen Mary is a Titanic-era liner that was decommissioned in the 1960s, brought into Long Beach as a tourist attraction. The Walt Disney Company tried operating it for awhile, but was unable to turn a profit. Now it is owned and operated by the City of Long Beach.

I was scheduled to stay in a standard room, but when I got there it had not yet been cleaned (despite the assurances of the front desk staff). Dirty sheets, towels and trash everywhere, and dirty diapers in the bathroom. It was the dirty diapers that did me in.

I called the front desk, and a guy came running down the hall and took me to the Churchill Suite (where, apparently, old Winston stayed while on board). Huge set of rooms, certainly by cruise ship standards. King bed in a room that could have fit two of them. Sitting room with two couches and two desks (one of the couches was a pull-out bed). Two bathrooms, maid's quarters, kitchen - the works. All with beautiful wood cabinets on all the walls.

Sadly, I didn't get much time to wander around the ship, but I did notice high-end stores on the "Promenade" deck, and some self-guided tours available of the ship.

I had dinner in one restaurant, "Sir Winston's." Luxe setting, terrific food and reasonable prices.

There are snack shops and bars throughout the ship, but the one night we were there, the "Comedy Club" was virtually empty.

They've managed to secure a cold-war era Soviet Submarine, and there was a fairly constant stream of people in and out, so it must have been impressive.

If you must work, there is a small wireless area next to the main check-in lobby. And before we found that, my associate grabbed a ship map and said he saw a wireless room on the top deck. Since there were lots of common areas, bars and restaurants up there, it made sense. So after lots of stairs, and a few ladders, we found the "wireless" room. A REAL "wireless" room, circa 1926 - when "wireless" meant RADIO!!!!!!

I wouldn't stay there for a planned vacation, but if I was wandering up or down the California coast, and wanted a place to spend the night, a $139 room was comfortable (as long as it's clean). And if you find dirty diapers in the room, make sure to call the front desk. You might get a suite!

The rooms are not being clean properly and it looked like the original carpet was still on the floor {that bad}. Rust in the bath tub

We stayed in a family suit for one night and had a miserable night. It was hot and humid, and the air barely blows out cool air. The place smells like old mildew and the rooms haven't been updated since the 60's. It is also very loud. I didn't sleep all night, our whole family was awake, and couldn't wait to leave. I would never go back. Nice place to tour, but don't stay there!

I stayed in one of the first class staterooms. Ask for the Long Beach side, it has a better view. The stateroom has a TV, a refrigerator, and a coffee maker, and 2 large beds. I booked the room on Queen Mary's website, and got an internet price of $79 dollars per night.
