The setting is world class, one of the most beautiful anywhere. The Poppy Coffee Shop on the lower level has nice lunches, sandwiches to hot dinners, is reasonably priced, cheerfully decorated, with views of the lake from the tables by the windows. Tea in the main lobby is fantastic; reservations are needed. Most of the tables have gorgeous views of the lake, a harpist plays in the background. The tea is actually a good substitute for lunch. Fresh fruit, a variety of small sandwiches and pastries, scones with clotted cream and jams, and any kind of freshly brewed, delicious tea.
The food is the dining room is very good but the best food in the area can be found at the Post Hotel, no comparison. The rooms at the Post are also much nicer. The Chateau is noisy and has thousands of visitors during the day. The rooms are also noisy from the buses coming and going and all the crowds. The Chateau offers many of the business services expected in a big city hotel and much of its character seems typical of a big city hotel rather than a mountain resort. On the "charm and local character" scale the Chateau would receive a low rating. The staff is unfailingly pleasant and helpful. White water rafting, horseback riding, hiking, and many other activities can be arranged by the staff.
In summary I would recommend the Post Hotel for quality of food and rooms, the Deer Lodge for price and location (it's within a 5 minute walk to the lake), and the Chateau for day visits.

My wife took me here for a milestone b'day. Wow! What a gorgeous spot. The staff made sure that we were exquisitely cared for. We had a romance package and the chateau really knows how to pamper discreetly. The scenery is wow! The room is wow! (I've been to the chateau in the summer too. A totally different kind of wow!) Go. It's not cheap, but you will never forget your fabulous stay.

The rooms are definitely overpriced and the hotel is huge, it seems totally out of character in design and size for a national park setting. The architecture is uninspired; and except for a few kitschy Swiss decorative touches, the chateau is typical of a nondescript business class hotel in a large city. The food is moderately good, but doesn't compare to the fare at the Post Hotel. The location is truly spectacular, but the hotel is an oversized mistake.

Splash out on a lake view room - save up - you wont regret it. The view is magnificent - especially early morning. If you cant afford it - stay in the nearby village and visit for the facilities. I return nearly every year and build my holiday around my days at the hotel. Never had a less than wonderful visit - friendly helpful staff, very comfortable, modern, spacious and well equipped rooms. A central base for many Banff Park attractions.
