Heading to a shore town in January made booking a hotel easy. Seems like all the hotels were competeing for my business offering ridiculously low rates and after visiting I can understand why. Had to go there for business. I booked this particular hotel because it had an on-site restauraunt and a heated indoor pool & jacuzzi. An added bonus was that it was right on the boardwalk with a beautiful view of the beach. The room was clean however the bathroom was rather small. Had some issues with my first room & a stubborn door, but they moved me to another room without any problems. The only thing that was disappointing was that the restaurant was closed during the off season. Actually almost everything is closed in that town in January. I wish the hotel site had mentioned that it was unavailable. I am happy that I stayed at the HJ Plaza and it was worth the price I paid ($* for an upgraded room). However I would not pay the the over-the top prices to stay here in the summer. For $* it was just fine. I go back again in the off-season.

Stayed week of 13 oct, 2008. Very disappointed. We paid for the Oceanfront Delux, off season, to enjoy the ocean and quiet. One moring there was banging on the roof directly above our top floor room at 7:30. We called the desk and they said they would have them stop. 2 days later, at 8:30. Same deal. Light switches were dirty...all of them, old toothpaste on the bathroom wall stayed the whole time we did, coffee wasn't replaced, called the desk and ended up getting it ourselves 6 hours later. Dirt smudge marks on the doors, beds advertised were old and worn out...could feel springs....this was delux?
I never write reviews and have since gone back and written good reviews for nice places we stayed. This was unbelieveable. I wrote Howard Johnson too...they have forwarded it to the independant owner. Nothing back yet.
Lobby, restaurant, hallways....all nice and well decorated seemingly pretty clean. Elevator was filthy. We will never stay again....off season rate didn't make up for the off quality.

I have stayed at this hotel twice, the first time was less than stellar, but the second trip was wonderful and definitely redeemed this hotel in my opinion. It is an excellent location, right on the boardwalk and next to the Brass Balls Saloon and eatery. You will be right on the beach, so you don't to worry if you forget anything in the room and you don't have to worry about using the boardwalk bathrooms as your hotel is right there. I would never stay anywhere but ocean front as the rooms on the side of the hotel can be noisy with the bar next door and they are facing the heating and cooling vents for the other building so can be quite hot. You do still have a balcony. Ocean front rooms are much more upscale, beautiful bathrooms, bigger balconies with a wonderful view. Definitely the place to stay if you'd like to be right in the action.
