Beautiful grounds & activities

My family (2 children ages 7 & 13) stayed here for 9 days at end of May/early June. My husband I had been here 10 years ago and loved it. This time we brought the kids. There are 3 pools - one of which is heated, and outdoor hot tubs. The heated pool was still cool, but we got used to it and warmed up in the hot tubs. On the weekends, the hotel had activities for the kids - s'mores on the veranda, surfing lessons that my 13 year old enjoyed, book reading for my 7 year old, and movies poolside on Saturday nights. There is also shuffle board & ping pong available everyday - anytime.
For Jazz fans, the hotel hosts Jazz concerts on some Friday nights in the summer. We were able to sit out our hotel room balcony and listen to the music for free.
The location of the hotel was great as well. While the hotel runs a shuttle down to Balboa Island, we didn't want to wait for it. Even my 7 year old made the walk to Balboa Island without any problem. We also walked over to the Back Bay Science Center and had a good time bird watching and learning about the bay ecology.
There is a coffee shop at the hotel and a gift shop. We frequented both. The coffee shop had Starbucks coffee and great chocolate muffins.
The nachos at the lounge are huge and were great for sharing with the kids. The lounge also offers a kids menu which is great for my 7 year old "bird".
We will definitely be back! Enjoyed it even more with the kids along.
Disappointing

The service at the hotel was good the staff was very friendly and helpful, however the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. The entrance and grounds are beautiful but the rooms are old and smell musty. The parking is $19.00 per day for self parking and $27.00 for overnight valet and is returned with bird droppings on it! The food is mediocre and the lobby bar is closed, the bed is hard and you hear the guests above you in the night walking around, all in all not a luxury experience. The location is great but we would not stay there again.

Breakfast cup of tea had lipstick on one side. Spoon had coffee mark on it. Patio off bedroom not clean. Bathroom cabinet had chunk of wood cut out of it. For the price of the room I expected better accommodations.
Not worth the money

This resort just wasn't what you'd expect for $$$ per night. They allow pets, so if you or a family member have allergies, be prepared for lots of sneezing -- not only because of the animal dander, but also the musty smell in the room (although the room did appear to be clean). We stayed in the Balboa building, which needed updating. The pool is older, small and just ordinary, and the service -- from valet ($27 per day!), to restaurant, to housekeeping -- is not what you'd expect from the Hyatt. Very disappointing service with lots of waiting around to be acknowledged.
Newport Beach and surrounding area was beautiful -- I would definitely go back to the area, but I'd consider another hotel.
