My husband and I loved the Hotel Carlton! The staff was so friendly and helpful. The hotel was beautiful. I loved how the lobby felt like a well designed living room. You always saw people reading, talking and relaxing. When we left, we actually felt sad.
Yes, stay here.

This was a great hotel. The staff was so helpful and friendly. Immediately upon arrival we felt welcome and comfortable. The front desk man even gave us a city map and drew on it where not to go for safety. The decor was really cool and interesting. The room was just fine, clean and comfortable. This hotel is only about two blocks from a lot of shopping and restaurants. I would definitely go back to the Carlton.
Long walk to Union Square; problems with room/staff

This hotel is OK but it is a good walk to Union Square and is on the edge of the Tenderloin.
The lock on our room did not work the first night, then it would not unlock after they fixed it.
We changed rooms and while we were moving, a personal item was taken from the lobby and the staff did not seen to care; no accomodation was made for the inconvenience/safety concern about the lock or the stolen personal item from the lobby while we changed rooms.
Clean, comfortable and convenient.

The desk service was prompt and friendly. The room was small but comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless. The restaurant, called Saha', serves "Arabic fusion cuisine" including some vegetarian and vegan dishes. I thought the food was fantastic. The Muni bus stop is across the street from the hotel, so public transportation was very easy to use. Given the price, my expectations were met and exceeded. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is not looking for modern or glamorous.

You've got to walk or use public transport (nice buses $1.50 for half a day) to get to "touristy" places from this hotel. If you're willing to do that, the Carlton is excellent in several ways: quiet, free wi-fi, great shower, great beds, very clean and fresh smelling room, helpful and friendly staff. Good restaurant on site with great breakfast choices. It's not swanky or beautiful but it's attractive, functional, and comfortable.
