Frankly, we booked this stay with reluctance. Even the day prior to our departure from NJ, I was calling Walt Disney World booking to inquire about an upgrade to a moderate-level resort. This was our first trip to a Disney resort and I feared that a value-rated resort would be, well, shabby. If you've been to a Disney resort, you can probably find the oxymoron in that statement. As we discovered, Disney doesn't do "shabby".
To our delight, Disney's Pop Century Resort fit the bill for our low-frills, budget-minded, relaxation-seeking, shab-avoiding family-of-four. We booked a "preferred-room" and made a call to the resort the week prior to request a ground level room, which they were able to accommodate.
What we found upon our arrival exceeded our expectations. We used the online check-in service days prior and were apprehensive when we showed up at the resort at 1pm, 2 hours before the stated check-in time. But we were greeted warmly and were whisked immediately past the arcade, the shop and cafeteria-style restaurant, the oh-so inviting pool, and even-more enticing poolside bar, to our nearby room in the 70s building. We found our room, with 2 full-size beds, to be just big enough for us to be comfortable. We were able to store away our clothing in drawers, on shelves, and in a vanity/closet area. There were spaces in the room for us to keep our luggage and an umbrella stroller out of the way, as well as hang our rain gear, which was used more than we care to recall. And it was clean. Very clean.
In a type-A planning moment of brilliance, if I don't mind saying so myself, I decided to purchase and pack a 5-cup coffee maker and all the fixin's when I learned there were no coffee makers in the rooms. It fit perfectly upon our room's table-for-2 and it saved our children from the decaffeinated slugs that would have otherwise been their parents. So worth the space it took up in our luggage!
It's also worth mentioning that we are a family of foodies, kids included, so we also had concerns about the on-site Everything Pop Food Court after reading poor traveler reviews. What we found were many options, like the delicious Mediterranean flatbreads and pre-made California rolls to the delight of my 4 year-old foodie. I can't say that given the choice to dine out anywhere, I would head to Pop Century, but for a poolside meal after a long day on your feet, I found that it fit the bill. I also discovered that Disney portion sizes are meant to please travelers of all sizes. In other words, we were often able to share a meal between 2 of us. We used a local grocery delivery service for some breakfast basics, more because we are lazy than cheap. The front desk held the packages for us and even kept the dairy nice and cold until we were free to pick everything up and bring back to our room to fill our collapsible cooler, which we refilled with ice daily from the nearby machine.
Pop Century doesn't seem to offer much in the way of entertainment or activities. It's very do-it-yourself. But we were often so overstimulated from park life, that lounging by the pool with our travel Scrabble and watching the kids in their glory under the pool's water spray features was all the entertainment we desired.
I paused at whether to rate this resort 3 stars or 4. I believe it depends on your reference point. It's not even an almost-luxury resort, but it's enough. Pop Century is so clean, quiet-enough and pleasant-enough that we will save a lot of money on our someday second trip to Disney World by staying at Pop Century again.

We enjoyed our stay! DISNEY definately knows how to take care of their patrons! Beds we too hard for my liking but my husband loved it!
