This palatial hotel rivals the five-star Jefferson in retro-chic at a fraction of the cost (rooms are $79 - $239). This elegant hotel opened in 1929, complete with a roof garden ballroom for Gatsby's and Daisy's to dance till dawn in. Famous guests have included Elvis and Elizabeth Taylor. Take an afternoon stroll from here to a Canal, designed by George Washington, where romantic (and free) boat-rides are offered daily. In the evening, step out for fine dining and cool nightclub action in historic Shockoe Slip. An unbelievable bargain.
