Nice facilities, terrible service

The Hotel Donaldson is an excellent revitalizaton of classic architecture. I applaud the effort put forth to renovate a piece of Fargo's history into a trendy boutique hotel. Unfortunately the inept staff ruins the experience because they are incompetent at best and offensively inefficient when it comes to making sure the details are right. The highlight of my stay was the aveda shampoo samples they leave in the bathroom.

Local Secrets, Big Finds 2007 Pick

Swanky digs aren’t exclusive to New York and L.A., you know; this "beautiful, art-inspired hotel" – which boasts flat-screen TVs, heated ceramic floors, and "a rooftop hot tub" – offers "reasonable rates, especially for a larger city." In addition to the "great rooms," the Donaldson provides ample opportunity for eating and drinking, whether at the swanky "roof bar," the "nice restaurant," or the "front bar for lunch during the day and drinks later."

Boxcar Blues

The Hotel Donaldson is a chic boutique hotel of modern design, with artwork from regional artists featured throughout. The rooms are wonderfully spacious and the downstairs lounge and restaurant are the city's hot and trendy nightspots. Service is Nodak friendly with a touch of boutique attitude thrown in. The problem? It's impossible to sleep there. The hotel is one block from the local train tracks, and the trains run throughout the night, nearly every hour, and they blow their horns at EVERY crossing. I counted. There are 6 crossings within horn distance of the Hotel Donaldson. If you're on the second floor of this hotel, you'll be right above the hot and trendy nightspots... so the good news is you'll be able to listen to the music and thump thump thump from below while you're waiting for the train whistles. The hotel provides earplugs. I'd have preferred a refund.
