Celebrity Resorts Steamboat Springs Hilltop

Celebrity Resorts Hilltop is actually a timeshare facility (RCI Exchange), but they also rent condos like a hotel when owners are not in residence. I found a good internet special (25% off a 4 night stay) that made Celebrity very attractive indeed, so we decided to give it a go despite mixed reviews I'd read on other websites. After all, this meant we'd have a kitchen.

So what was the reception like? Well, we got off to a bumpy start because we arrived "after-hours." The front desk is only manned until 11 PM, and a long drive from Denver meant we didn't get there until after midnight. With that said, there is a sign beside a phone that tells you exactly what to do in such a situation. We called a security guard who arrived in quick time to look for our packet and get us settled in a condo. She found our packet... but no room key. This led to a series of phone calls that had us waiting in the lobby with our luggage for much longer than desirable. However, she eventually worked it out and escorted us down the hallway.

What was our room like? The condo in which we stayed was great. The building is, admittedly, a little bit dated... but we didn't care about that. The cute but simple decor of our condo fit the "Wild West" with cowboy wallpaper in one bathroom. Our kitchen was well stocked with all the dishes we needed to cook. The coffee pot had a basket with hot chocolate, coffee and tea for our first morning in residence. The master bedroom had tons of storage space and a comfortable bed with TV. Our son was happy on the fold-out couch with his own full bathroom and personal remote control. We had individual heating/ac units to control the temperature. Our view was of a not-so-spectacular parking lot... but we'd get lots of scenery when skiing. All was clean and comfortable. On our last night when we were completely exhausted, we enjoyed using the DVD player and watching a movie we'd bought at Safeway.

(Note: Housekeeping is only once a week, so you're going to wash your own dishes unless you pay extra.)

Pluses Worth Mentioning? Once we actually met the desk staff, they were nothing but apologetic about the difficulties at check-in, and every other interaction was completely professional and efficient. For instance, when we asked for extra pillows and blankets, we had them within minutes. Check-OUT was easy. I also loved being across the hall from the laundry room because I took full advantage and washed everything before packing. (This made UNpacking a lot easier later.) Operating the machines was free. Detergent was available in a vending machine. My son enjoyed borrowing a sled for use on a small hill behind the swimming pool. (The pool is kinda small, so don't expect to do laps.) My husband watched him build a snowman through the glass windows from the hot tub. The ski resort is pretty close as well. I'm talking under ten minutes. While we had a car so opted to drive to ski each morning, a shuttle takes guests to and from the slopes at regular intervals throughout the day at ski season.

Bottom Line? We got incrediable value for money---Celebrity had the most affordable CONDOS still available in town at the time we visited in February 2008---and we enjoyed the one-bedroom unit in which we stayed.... great for our family of three. Layouts vary, so if unhappy, ask for a switch! I'd certainly stay at Celebrity again on another vacation.

It looked like many of the rooms however, were rentals but not sure? Our floor was fine but there were screens out and curtains amiss on other floors. Staff was very nice to us and the laundry was FREE! I would stay there again but at the price I paid and no more. No problem. I would rate 2-3/5 stars.

No late checkout

The inside of the condo was fairly nice - loft style, although the building itself is rather outdated. The walls are paper thin so you can hear people coming and going in the hallway. I was very disappointed that the hotel would not give us a late checkout. We had come for the Steamboat Triathlon and needed to take showers after the tri before the long drive back to Denver. Although it was extremely slow season and it was clear they would not be busy and no one would be checking in for that Sunday night, they would not give us a late checkout and insisted we be out by 10am. In previous years, other condos have given us a late checkout, eg the Ptarmagin House. They did however, let us come back after and use the bathrooms for the pool area to shower, change.

Best Things Nearby:
We enjoyed as many things as we could squeeze into 5 days, but still didn't get to do everything we wanted. We snowshoed to Fish Creek Falls and around the trails there and visited Strawberry Park Hot Springs, which was a real experience!

Downtown was hopping with store-browsers. There are tons of unique shops, restaurants, and nightspots-for a little "cow town," Steamboat really has their act together.

The skiing was fabulous, and there were no lines for the lifts. I mean, literally, we could come down a slope and get right back on the lift. We were so lucky this snowstorm hit right when we got there!

In town there are activities every day and night. The recreation center in town has a hot spring, and there are ice skating rinks and never-ending trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. The summer activities are equally as abundant. What a great place to visit!!

Best Things About the Resort:
We stayed at the Hilltop, which is not far from the ski slopes or town. They had a shuttle running constantly to the slopes, and public transportation was available just at the bottom of the drive for jaunts into town.

Our unit was simple, but very clean and comfortable, with plenty of room. Our one-bedroom unit had two full bathrooms and a very well-equipped mini kitchen-they didn't leave out any details. We took our Thanksgiving leftovers along and were able to do all the cooking we needed with what was provided there (even a grater, a measuring cup, and a cutting board-it was all there.) The king-size bed was big and very comfortable. The unit had a sofa bed, cable TV, and all the usual amenities.

The indoor pool and Jacuzzi area looked a little old and rundown, but they were clean and well-kept. The staff was all very nice and very accommodating. We will definitely go back.

Resort Experience:
We took off as fast as we could get disentangled from the family Thanksgiving celebrations and drove up to Steamboat for Thanksgiving weekend. The slopes were barely open, but thanks to a big snowstorm, it turned out to be a fabulous ski weekend. Being so early in the season, there were not many visitors. We had the place almost to ourselves. It was a great time for novice skiers and snowboarders to get out there and get ready for the season, and there were lots of people learning on the bunny slopes.

Skiing is not all there is in Steamboat. There are endless choices of indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family. They made me want to stay a lot longer to do a little of everything! There are plenty of trails for winter and summer activities, the ski mountain is BIG, and the hot springs are definitely worth a soak after a hard day of playing in the snow. If you go to Strawberry Park Hot Springs, I highly recommend taking some beach shoes, and I also recommend using the restrooms at the top of the hill for changing into swimsuits, as there's no good place to change down by the hot springs. The flagstones around the springs are very, very cold in bare feet, and there are patches of snow to step across if it's snowing hard!

We didn't do any ice climbing, but that's another option for those so inclined. We passed some people on the trail to Fish Creek Falls looking to see if the falls were frozen enough to climb. Lots of people were snowshoeing and cross-country skiing out on the trails. There are short and long trails and easy and steep ones-something for everyone really. I give Steamboat Springs a big thumb’s up as an all-around great place to visit any time of year!
