Wintergreen in the Spring!

Don’t let anybody tell you that Wintergreen Resort ( Rt. 29 south of Charlottesville, VA) is just for winter. When my sister, who lives in Richmond, suggested that we take my mom, who lives in Alexandria, there for Mother's Day, I thought it was a pretty silly idea. Wintergreen is a cold weather ski resort, right? Wrong.

We did take my mom to the spa there for Mother’s Day, a gift that treated all three of us. The second week of May on Wintergreen Mountain is incredibly beautiful. The spa must be one of the highest points because it feels like you can see across the whole state from there. Huge windows surround the salon, indoor pool, hot tub and lounge and give you a view second to none. So while we were waiting for our hot stone massage and manicures, we were gazing at thickets of mountain laurel just in bloom, dogwoods flowering and birds everywhere – viewed through the mist of a late spring afternoon. That is serenity and inspiration rolled into one.

It was a great discovery. Maybe they call it Wintergreen so not everyone will know how brilliant spring is and it won’t get too crowded. But since I’m now in on the secret, you can bet that our family will be meeting there again in the spring – and probably the summer and fall as well.

A Beautiful Resort

We've been to Wintergreen many times and just love it more with each visit. The view of the Blue Ridge Mtns and the surrounding valley's are gorgous. On site there is, tennis, swimming (indoors/outdoors), a full service spa and hiking. In the winter, snow skiing and snow tubing are on site. There are scheduled activities for adults and kids. Dining here is excellent. There are 3 restaurants on the mountain - two are fine dining the other is family friendly and casual. All have outstanding service and excellent food. There are also several restaurants in the valley, within a 20 mile drive. Wintergreen Resort is comprised of two areas - Black Rock Village which is located mid-mountain and Devils Knob which is at the summit. We prefer to stay in Black Rock Village as it is close to the skiing and you can wasily walk to the shops and restaurants (we stay at Timbers Condos as they are ski in/out). Devils Knob accommodations have beautiful mtn and valley views and are closer to golf, tennis and the Spa. I highly recommend this resort for couples and families as well.

The accomodations were top notch - just like staying at your own cabin. It was complete with fireplace (firewood provided), books, cds, videotapes, board games, etc. The rooms were large and spacious. We had a two bedroom unit with a king bed and a queen bed upstairs. All expected ammenities, including microwave, washer, dryer (very useful in wet weather), fridge, vcr, etc. were there.

Wintergreen Resort had terrific views from all rooms of the surrounding forest (we went in late October and the color change was amazing). Ski season starts in mid to late December, while golfing ends November 1. Central facilites had shopping, several dining options, and spa/gym. Very friendly and helpful staff.
