Not quite ski in, ski out, Huntley Lodge sits at the base of the ski runs. You can ski home at the end of the day, but it’s about 100 yards flat walk to the lifts in the morning. Huntley Lodge is our favorite place to stay at Big Sky, and even in summer when visiting Yellowstone, we sometimes stay there.
The Lodge dates back to the founding of the ski area. Rooms are large, attractive, and very comfortable. As far as I know, all the rooms have two queen beds, two arm chairs, and a decent sized table. A room divider separates the bed room from an alcove with microwave and refrigerator. Large closets and dressers provided plenty of storage space for ski week. The one flaw is the hardwood floors which make for thunderous echos in the morning and after the lifts close when all those people staying here clomp down the halls in ski boots. If the place had concrete floors for perpetual quite, I would call Huntley Lodge the perfect ski lodge. This noise is no problem in summer, when the place meets the highest standards of quiet.
Rooms either face Lone Mountain (more expensive) or down the valley. Lone Mtn. views are spectacular. We take mountain side in summer, valley in winter. Do the math - if you are skiing all day, how much daylight is left to see the view? Is it worth it?
The large Jacuzzi and heated pool are outdoors, on the mountain side of the building, access through a dressing room on the ground floor. Getting from the door to the hot water can be brisk, but glass walls surrounding the pool complex keep the wind out. Our daily routine was to head for the Jacuzzi as soon as we got out of our ski gear– highly recommended. The attractive lobby sits well inside the building from the front desk– no cold blasts of air when
the door is open, no buzzing around by people checking in and bell hops. The lobby is atrium style, two stories, with a large stone faced fireplace taking up most of one wall and with very comfortable chairs and couches
There is an interesting little jewelry shop just off the check in lobby that specializes in Montana gemstones, emeralds, I think. Anyhow, most of the world’s supply comes form some other country, but Montana also has a significant if little known deposit.
