Trump International Hotel & Tower

Trump International Hotel & Tower

We've stayed at the Trump International twice. Once as part of our annual Thanksgiving jaunt, and again when my wife and I took a quite New York weekend to ourselves.

The Trump International is the old Paramount Building, right on the north side of Columbus Circle. One side of the hotel looks southwest (through floor-to-ceiling windows). That gives you a view of midtown Manhattan, Columbus Circle, and the new Time Warner building dominating the horizon.

The other side of the building looks northeast (through the same huge windows) with a lovely view of upper Manhattan, and most especially Central Park.

The rooms are smallish by most standards, but relatively large by New York standards. You'll usually get a separate bedroom and a small sitting room. The first time we stayed at the Trump International, the bedroom was on the inside of the building, and the sitting room was at the windows. That's kind of a disappointment if you want to retire with a view of the city lights.

The second time we had a suite; our bedroom and sitting room were both along the Central Park side of the hotel, with views of the park. The bedroom was large, and the sitting room was essentially a separate bedroom. The bathroom was gilded (as only Trump can guild), with black marble everywhere.

Some of the rooms at the Trump are actually small apartments (as is frequently the style at midtown hotels). And according to one employee, the tenants often turn their private rooms into the hotel's inventory. So when you rent one of those rooms, you're essentially renting a private home.

That was the case with one room - there was a large closet where the tenant's private things were stored, much like you would find if renting a beach house.

We tried room service just once - the prices were astronomical! Didn't bother with the downstairs restaurant (which is operated by the WORLD FAMOUS JEAN GEORGE—you MUST speak in capital letters when talking about that restaurant...).

All that being said, it's a terrific hotel in a great location. But for $500 a night (for the regular room), I'll not return.

However, the park-view suite (which cost me over $800) is a wonderful place to relax with the one you love.
