Overview

Lake Tahoe is a beautiful area and the resort was very nice (with a few drawbacks which I'll describe in the accomodations section). This is definitely a place to get outside and enjoy mother nature. Go across the border to the Nevada casinos if you must, but unless you're really into gambling, I wouldn't bother.Quick Tips: Everything you've heard about Lake Tahoe traffic is true - it SUCKS! We learned several shortcuts, back roads, and times to avoid being on the road.Best Way To Get Around: I walked a lot and was surprised that the high altitude didn't affect me (I'm not exactly a threat for the Boston Marathon). Most of the hotels have shuttle buses which helps. But to get to t...Read More

Hotel | "Embassy Vacation Resort Lake Tahoe"

Don't confuse the mostly timeshare Embassy Vacation Resort on Ski Run Blvd with the Embassy Suites Hotel/Resort on Lake Tahoe Blvd just across the border from the casinos. Both are beautiful facilities but we stayed at the Vacation Resort. Our two bedroom condo had a full kitchen, living area with fireplace, small balcony/deck, master bedroom with king bed and jacuzzi tub and second bedroom (which can be a separate lockout) with two double beds and bathroom. It was decorated in kind of a chic western ski lodge theme. All in all the rooms were quite comfortable. However, the odd orientation of the resort to the lake gives most rooms a lovely view of the street instead of the lake. You do get...Read More

Lake Tahoe Visitor Center

The Lake Tahoe Visitor Center is a great destination for an afternoon of learning about the flora and fauna of Lake Tahoe. There are several easy nature trails but the best is the Rainbow Trail -- pick up a self-guided tour map and follow the trail to the Stream Profile Chamber where you go underground to view trout, salmon, and other critters. My 11-year-old son was fascinated with this exhibit and used up quite a bit of videotape there. This is probably the best free attraction in South Lake Tahoe. We also walked one of the trails to the beach and listened to a park ranger talk about insects. There is also a small amphitheater where nightime presentations are frequently held. The Tallac Histor...Read More

The US Forest Service manages this historic site of the resort built in the 1880s by Lucky Baldwin. Three large estates and several outbuildings still remain. The Baldwin estate serves as a small museum and has an excellent 15 minute film about the site. We made a reservation to tour the Pope Estate and it was well worth it. It was a fascinating glimpse into the past when the rich and famous retreated to the mountains to be entertained by their equally well-heeled hosts. I found the servants housing and facilities just as interesting as the fancy house. The restoration work that's being done on the estate is amazing -- many of the original design and decorative features have been re-created...Read More

Attraction | "The Gondola at Heavenly"

For my money, this is the most spectacular attraction in Lake Tahoe. The price may seem a little steep at first, but we found discount coupons were readily available and even without them, it's well worth the fare. The comfortable gondolas start out at the new Marriott resort (under construction) and proceed up the mountain offering you incredible views of Lake Tahoe. Half way up (9123 feet elevation), you can get out at Malcolm's deck which provides you with "views of the Carson Valley to the east, and Desolation Wilderness to the west…not to mention, jaw-dropping shore-to-shore views of Lake Tahoe," to quote the Heavenly web-site. Continue on up to the summit for excellent hiking a...Read More

The drive from Reno to South Lake Tahoe along the eastern shore was quite enjoyable. There wasn't much traffic and the scenery was gorgeous. The anticipation of two weeks of vacation probably buoyed our spirits as well. So, for our return to Reno, we decided to drive around the west and north shores. Big mistake. We had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery because we were going so slow, when we were going at all. And gas stations are few and far between. The view of Emerald Bay is marvelous although parking at the viewpoint is difficult. There were several other nice vistas along the way. Several quaint towns dot the highway (ha!) but the pace of the drive soured us on stopping...Read More

Attraction | "Kid fishing and the attack of the mutant beaver!"

We tried 3 places: Tahoe Keys, Sawmill Pond, and Angora Lake. Tahoe Keys: The local outfitter told us the street to turn on to find a calm fishing spot in this labyrinth of nice homes and man made canals. On his second cast with the trusty bobber and worm combination, my son landed a nice 8 inch bass. We released it and in the course of an hour caught a couple more little sunfish. Just as we were about to pack it in, we spotted a huge brown blob in the water swimming ominously toward us! What could it be? Giant lake trout? Sturgeon? Sea monster? Once I saw the flat tail I realized what it was -- a beaver the size of a Buick! He swam directly at the dropoff where we were standing and dis...Read More

Dining in South Lake Tahoe

Story/Tip

Quote:
We're embarassed to admit that even with all the great restaurants in South Lake Tahoe, we ate at McDonald's and KFC more than we should have. In our defense, the McDonalds was right next to the Embassy Vacation Resort parking lot and had excellent blackberry shakes. The KFC was just across the street and had a 2-for-1 special on Crispy Chicken Caesar roll-ups which were pretty good! But we did go to real restaurants, too, and here's a rundown of our favorites: The Naked Fish -- There are a lot of sushi restaurants in Tahoe and a lot of them feature "all-you-can-eat sushi", but the Naked Fish was the best by a mile. Fast, friendly, and fantastic fresh sushi. Our favorite visit was ...Read More
