During Spring Break of 2002, I took my family on a GREAT trip to Vail, CO for some super snow skiing FUN!

The best thing to do at Vail, CO, during Spring Break is to go snow skiing! My family and I have been to Vail several times during Spring Break and the snow has always been great. I love how large the ski resort is. You can ski for several days at this resort and never go down the same trail twice (unless you want to, and you will).

The back bowls of Vail are one of my favorite places on the entire planet. You need to be an intermediate (or advanced) level skier to enjoy the back bowls, but if you are at that skill level, there are very few places in the world where the skiing gets any better. My 3 kids love the Ski School and it is a great way for my wife and I to get off to the back bowls together.

The crowds are not to bad and the many express lifts and gondolas get the skiers to the top of the mountain quickly. If you enjoy skiing through the trees on Green level trails with your kids, there are numerous places that Vail has set up just for that. It’s great FUN!

Quick Tips:

The best suggestion I can give you is to plan ahead. If you want to go snow skiing anywhere in Colorado during Spring Break you need to deposit your week as much ahead of time as possible. Last time I deposited my week a year in advance and it took at least 6 months before RCI was able to confirm a reservation in any one of the 20 resorts that I requested in central Colorado.

One tip that I can give you to save some money, make sure you join the Peak program (see www.snow.com). You can get discounts on lift tickets and earn points toward free lift tickets. Another tip to save money, pack a light lunch each day while snow skiing. I always make a large amount of beef jerky by using a dehydrator before my vacation begins. Beef jerky is very high in protein, keeps a long time, and is very light weight to carry while you are skiing. You can go into any of the lodges and purchase a drink and eat your packed lunch at a table with a very beautiful view. We were able to save about a day using this method.

Best Way To Get Around:

We live in the northern part of Texas, and we always drive to central Colorado for our ski trips (another great way to save money). However, if you don’t have a car, there are shuttle busses that will take you just about anywhere you want to go, for free. You can use them to make trips to the grocery store, get to the slops, or even for sightseeing if you wish. For a small fee you can even catch a shuttle bus to other nearby ski resorts such as Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, or Keystone.
