I remember visiting Niagara Falls as a child and was in awe at the size of the falls. Returning as an adult, the falls sure seemed bigger when I was smaller!
The falls are a wonderous beauty, however. The time of year we visited made it a little unbearable because it was so cold. On the Canadian side, the mist is fairly heavy at the outdoor viewing area. From the U.S. side, we didn't notice any mist and were able to get right up to the falls as the observation area runs directly beside the water. Since it was winter, the Maid of the Mist boat rides and the outdoor paths up the side of the falls were obviously not open. However, you could still go in the underground tunnels (Journey Behind the Falls-$7.00/adults, $3.50/kids) and peer through the openings from behind the water. As you can imagine, there was quite a bit of ice frozen solid in these areas. The tunnels are interesting as there are stories posted on the walls along the way.
When visiting Niagara Falls there are two important things to do. First, make sure to view the falls from both sides because it is a totally different view and second, visit at night. The falls are spectacular in the evening with the multi-colored lights shining out from behind the water. Every few seconds, the lights rotate and change colors. A great place to view this is from the Skylon Tower on the Canadian side.
Niagara Falls was an approximate three hour drive from Horseshoe Valley on mainly interstate roads. Make the trip to see this beautiful natural wonder!
