Boston - Like a Resident or a Tourist

A travel journal to Boston by mlkraemer

Boston is a great place to visit... and an even better place to live. Whether you're here for a weekend or settling in, here are some suggestions for exploring like a resident (Boston accent not required).

Take in city views from the 'T''s red line between the Charles/MGH and Kendall stops. Eat at one of Newbury Street's many ethnic restaurants. See Little Joe Cook at the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Boston is a very walkable city. But, the subway system, popularly known as the 'T' is your best bet for a weekend of exploring. Driving is not for the faint of heart: Boston's 'Big Dig' and native drivers combine to make navigating by car difficult at best.

Restaurant

This Vietnamese restaurant boasts great food at reasonable prices. The Harvard Square location is a bit more upscale than other locations and the Newbury Street outpost has outdoor seating. Must have dishes include the Vietnamese salad and tofu curry.

Elephant WalkBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

The Elephant Walk has become a kind of understated culinary institution in Boston. The menu is divided into French dishes and Cambodian ones and diners attest that both include excellent selections. I have only ordered off the Cambodian side, but was impressed by the rich flavors of the catfish with coconut milk and fresh Cambodian salad. Service is excellent and the atmosphere in the front half of the restaurant was cozy and romantic.

Cantab LoungeBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "The Cantab Lounge"

With the local R&B legend 'Little Joe Cook and the Thrillers' playing every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, the Cantab Lounge is a great place to bring together a group of friends. The bar is one of the few spots in Boston where the crowd is ethnically diverse and, without exceptions, inviting. Little Joe's repetoire is limited, but the charm is in feeling like a regular after only being there for a few hours.

Boston Duck ToursBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

If you don't mind being quacked at or riding in a WWII land-water vehicle, Boston Duck Tours provides one of the most entertaining tourist experiences the city has to offer. Each Duck Tour guide has its own persona, complete with costume and accent-- mine was dressed as an Italian Gondolier. The guides spout little known Beantown facts and take you past many of the major city attractions, including Boston Common, Faniel Hall and the North End.

Blue Hills ReservationBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "A Day Hike Just Minutes from the City"

Just a short drive down I-93 from Boston's center, the Blue Hills Reservation is a great place to go if you want to escape the city noise and do some easy hiking. At the Reservation's modest hilltops, the views of Boston are great. Skip the small museum, pack a picnic and enjoy the meandering trails.
