Guatemala City itself won't be a highlight in this gorgeous, adverturesome country. But while you are in town to make connections with your next destination there are a few highlights worth checking out. The Museo Ixchel del Traje Indigena is a good primer before exploring the Mayan Highlands to the west or Tikal to the East.

Quick Tips:

Do not try and do Guatemala in a week or less. I figured it would be a small, uninteresting country with not many attractions or sights to keep my attention. After nine days of travel I was frustrated at how many things I would not be able to do because of time constraints.

If you want to stay in Guatemala City in style, this is your best bet. Most nights would cost much more than the $110 I paid for a promotional weekend rate, which itself seems rather steep compared to the much less expensive local establishments. But it is a full-service Westin with clean, spacious rooms, and a fine spa to accompany its serviceable gym. The location is also ideal for walking around the city.
