As the large city in the northwest corner of Hungary, Gyor serves as a great starting point for discovering the many attractions of Transdanubia. Perhaps the highlight of the region is the 1000 year old abbey that is still in service in nearby Pannonhalma.

Quick Tips:

This is a large region and a car is the smart choice for getting around from town to town. However, bus and train service (though limited) is available.

If you are not a connoisseur of fine porcelain such as myself, you can take solace in the lengthy side trip to Herend by dining in the sumptious Apicus restaurant. Naturally all the courses ae served on fine Herend China, but the gimmick is soon overshadowed by the exemplary meal and outstanding service. The French onion soup we sampled as an appetizer was distressingly low on cheese but quite tasty nonetheless. Whatever dairy shortage we had suffered during the first course was quickly compensated for in our deliciously rich and tangy dish of tender pork served with a gorgonzola sauce. Most unusual and satisfying. For dessert we were tempted with a rather firm pastry shell that was surrounded b...Read More

Muzeum Herend

Muzeum Herend displays a wide variety of porcelain creations from different eras in the company's 176-year history. Each room is designed to reflect the shifting changes in the artists' styles and consumers' interests. There are some gigantic objects in the museum, leading you to wonder how they could endure the firing process. My favorites were the examples of Chinoiserie vases from the 19th century. It is an interesting museum, but this is an art form which might not elicit enough of a favorable response from most travellers for which to make an extra side trip.

Founded in 1826, Herend is now the largest manufacturer of porcelain in the world. The company makes each one of their products (from China sets to figurines and decorative items) by hand, which is reflected in the respective price tags. In order to maintain the highest quality possible each product is also hand-inspected and approved, resulting in numerous pieces being destroyed with a bone-rattling crash each and every day.Visiting the Porcelanium offers one a chance to witness the manufacturing process up close. After a brief introductory, film visitors are led through a demonstration work area to see how pieces are thrown, decorated and painted. Afterwards one can visit the Victoria Brand s...Read More

When St. Stephen, the first king of the Hungarian state, began his quest to Christianize the nation he did so with the aid of Benedictine missionaries invited from Italy. They built a monastery in 996 that has transformed and grown over the years into the current incarnation of the Pannonhalma Abbey / Monastery.Today the church is the home for almost 350 young men and over 50 active Benedictine monks. While it serves a role as a truly important cultural and historical attraction of Hungary, the Pannonhalma Abbey is an active religious center. Religious services are still conducted and life goes on in the modern world much as it has for the past one thousand years.Because of its rich histo...Read More
