(Day) and Nightclubbing in São Paulo

A July 2000 trip to Sao Paulo by Clabrazil

São Paulo is one of those cities that make you feel like small fry. Its hugeness is reflected in the skyhigh buildings, the shining lights in the outdoors, the range variety of bars and restaurants. The money that runs free, the crowds everywhere you go...

The right to be unique. You will feel comfortable in São Paulo if you enjoy the difference. Differently from other big cities in Brazil, the standard is not to be like anyone else. It's amazing how it is possible to join the city crowds and still see each face, one by one.
- Enjoy the night!

Quick Tips:

- Go there in the end of the week and enjoy the weekend.
- Take advantage of its great metro system. You won't find anything similar in Rio, for example.
- Be careful when you are in a crowded place, for example. Thieves in São Paulo can be either the housewife going to pick up her kids at school or the Rasta selling things on the street. It's just a matter of opportunity. Keep your tabs on everyone.
- Prepare yourself to walk. Comfortable shoes, but don't forget to 'dress to kill'.
- Clerks and walkers in general, can can be very helpful when you're a foreigner. That's a typical Brazilian thing, by the way.

Best Way To Get Around:

- When you arrive at one of the airports, there are cheap buses you can take to your hotel. A taxi is also possible, but don't forget that Guarulhos Airport is 18Km away from the city centre.
- When you reach São Paulo by bus from anywhere in Brazil, you can take the metro right there, in the bus station. Very suitable.

Hotel

They are humble rooms. No luxury at all. But the best selling point is the fact that this hostel, owned by Mrs. Clara, is in the centre of São Paulo. So, no long walks with your heavy bags on your back. Also the diversity of guests makes it funny. When I was there, for example, there was a mother with her cute and talkative little daughter, who told me she was going to take part in a 'Miss Brazil' competition for kids. Just funny.

Attraction

It's located in a magic spot at Jardins, a high class quarter in the city. You ring the bell and wonderful clerks come to help you. They are kind and enjoy what they do. It makes the difference, especially when you're tired of being too flattered at shops or just ignored as you come in. The clothes are original and the quality is amazing. They open this space for new designers. If you're used to buy your clubbing garments in England, for example, you won't believe their prices. It's the place to go before enjoying the great night of São Paulo.

It's scary at first. Don't dress as a lady if you wanna enjoy the place. Don't even think about wearing those khakis! You'll be sharing the same roof with punks, light clubbers, heavy ones, rastafaris, tattooed people, those with various piercings, gothics... that's it! So, get a drink; if you wanna share a joint, go upstairs and relax.

Many shops selling the best of alternative fashion in the country are in Sao Paulo. It's also an irresistable place when you've been considering that new body piercing. There you can find some of the best professionals in the business who elevate piercing to an artform. Just check the holes they have in their ears! As the sun goes down, the place becomes a kind of warm up for the night. A good meeting place for anyone social.

It's actually a bookstore with all kind of national and foreign titles about sexual diversity. Very unique in Brazil, it's a pleasant place to read a book, drink some wine and get more information about alternative activities in São Paulo. If you're lucky, you can even enjoy some poets releasing their books. When I was there, I listened to erotic poetry about when you're over 65 in Portuguese and French. The wine was included!
