There are so many interesting neighborhoods to explore! I usually stay downtown, in Chinatown or near Union Square, and from there it's easy to explore the city.
Not to be missed are Alcatraz (the audio tour is great, and the ferry ride is a treat in itself), Chinatown for dim sum, the Mission for a burrito and a beer, Haight Ashbury for funky stores and used book shops, Golden Gate Park, Telegraph Hill, etc.
