Honeymoon

A September 2002 trip to Rome by lubarsh

Rome is fast. Don't let anyone tell you about tanned beautiful people lounging under olive trees letting the day roll by. Constant, fluid motion intermingled by grand history and high fashion: this is 21st century Rome. It can also be argued this was always Rome. From its founding on the seven hills to Futurism's celebration of everything modern, mechanical, and moving, Rome is at the forefront, in the center of everything.

Overview

Our honeymoon was fantastic. Here are some highlights:
1. Wandering the city at night. The city at night is more leisurely.
2. Palatine Hill. Fantastic views, amazing history. Most antiquity is clustered around the Forum.
3. The food. Take chances. Throw yourself on the mercy of the waiter.
4. Take a day trip to Pompeii. A truly moving experience.
5. Shopping. Go for the leather and the silk.
6. The Residanzia San Panteleo is great. Right off of Piazza Navona.

Quick Tips:

1. Take bugspray. Rome is infested with little glycerine-colored flies call tiger mosquitos. They are evil.
2. Bargain. Most shop owners are willing to give you a little off the price or throw in something extra.
3. Get a Musuem Pass the first day you are there. 20€ gets you into eight attractions (you''ll save about ).
4. White airport shuttles are a great way to get into the city ( for two people).
5. Wear a hat.
6. Bring a second pair of shoes. Switch daily.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walk. Walk. Walk. This is not to say it''s an easy walk. The streets are uneven and cobblestone.
For a first time in Rome on our honeymoon, we couldn't have picked a better place. The location can't be beat: 20 feet from the Piazza Novona and across the street from the Campo di Fiorre. The room was huge, the price was right (100 euro), and the service was spectacular.
