A May 2001 trip to Grand Canyon by Eric_

Quote: Seeing the Grand Canyon can be done from the edge, with tour busses or rental cars. "Experiencing" the Canyon has to be done from within. What a better way to do it than hiking from the South Rim to the North Rim, and then back again. Truely amazing!

The Grand Canyon is truely one of the World's greatest wonders. When you look at it, it almost looks unreal. Perhaps a really big painting hung up just outside your reach. However, when you start to walk down into it, you quickly begin to understand the magnitude and grandure of the location. Hiking into the Canyon is by far a "must do". I stress the word "hike", because if you come planning to "walk" into the Canyon, you will be in for dissapointment.Quick Tips: Hiking the Canyon means being prepared. Wear hiking clothes with proper footwear. The day we hiked there was snow on the South Rim and it was 100 degrees at the bottom, so do you homework before you go. PLan to bring lots of ...Read More

Best Things Nearby:There are lots of things to do in and around the Flagstaff area. The Grand Canyon is a day trip. As are the Red Rocks of Sedona. Sunset Crater is a fantastic visit to a dormant volcano...lava fields and everything. The meteor crater where the astronauts trained during the Apollo mission is just to the East, and your study of ancient civilizations start with Wapatki National Monument and Walnut Canyon. Did I mention hiking, mountain bike riding, fishing, skiing? Yea, Flagstaff has all that too!Best Things About the Resort:I really loved the units. The resort is a little spread out, but we were right next to the pool and recreation area. The fact t...Read More

The trip is beyond words. The size of the Canyon doesn't become evident until you start to hike in. The trails are very well maintained, but it still amazes me on how open the trails are in some places. I'm not big on heights, and some portions of the trails give you the opportunity to experience being on the edge of a 100ft+ drop, with nothing to stop you, not even a hand rail. Rim to Rim to Rim is a lot of miles and has huge elevation changes, but I will contend that if your feet are in good shape, and you are in reasonable health, it is a trip you can make. The main failure mode of the Canyon, are problems with repetitive injuries (knees) or blisters. Most people can usually overcome bei...Read More
