MASS MoCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) is spanking new - it opened in May 1999, in a converted 27-building historic mill complex in the Berkshire mountains. It's a bizarre, blue-collar location, but it provides plenty of space, tools, and time for artists working in sculpture, theater, dance, film, digital media and music. For the adults, it can be fun and thought-provoking. For the kids (my 9-year old actually said "This is art?") it's often fun, and no one complains when they run around a bit in the cavernous spaces. A chic hotel has crashed landed into into a blue collar town. The owners did a serious fix-up job on old but beautiful Victorian row houses, and created something that is pretty unique. Although the junior suite rooms work for Mom, Dad, and 2 kids, the ambience is targeted to adults. The kids loved the heated swimming pool (even in March!), jacuzzi, and sauna, and the recreation room that included a large, flat-screen TV with PlayStation. The nicest part is the detail: the rooms are each slightly different, and the lobby area includes a *real* relaxing area to hang out, read, listen to music and have a drink of coffee (morning) or something stronger (evening).
