Home exchange, aka "home swapping," is a savvy travelers way of seeing the world - at no cost!
It's really quite simple: you exchange your house/apartment with someone in another state or country for a mutually agreeable period of time. We have swapped our home in Hoboken, NJ, for periods of time as short as a weekend up to a whole summer!
Highlights: no costs of course, the comfort of a "real" home, and last but not least traveling as if you live in a place!
Quick Tips:
-Get to know your potential exchange partner via email, phone, or post
-Ask for pictures of inside and outside the home
-Be clear about your conditions - are you willing to care for a small pet? Are you traveling with extended family and need more space than usual?
-Be as flexible as possible regarding destination and travel date. (This is not always possible, but if you plan your swaps far enough in advance, you'll be travel further and longer than you ever imagined.)
Best Way To Get Around:
Many people who swap homes for vacation also swap their cars and boats! Most insurance companies in the U.S. cover anyone driving your car, but be sure to check.
When traveling we like to use our feet and mass transit, you get to see more and have the opportunity to embrace the neighborhood.
