Exploring Diocletian's Palace, hiking in the hills in the West of the city, sitting on the boulevard watching the Adriatic and sipping Turkish Coffee under the awnings, walking along the coast line and dipping your feet into the water.

Quick Tips:

An overnight ferry runs from Ancona,Italy to Split on alternating days. Spend the extra Euros and get a cabin (basic cabin for four, one way: 53 Euro per person including tax). You can get up early to watch the sun rise over the Adriatic. At the ferry terminal, you will probably be greeted by people looking to rent rooms. Not a bad option, if you are looking for budget accomodations and have a sense of humor. German is widely spoken by the Proprietors, and some English.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can walk everwhere in Split, but explore the options of taking boats to get out to some of the lesser inhabited islands. Ferry run from Italy to Split, or you can train or bus to Zagreb. I recommend the bus, they run more frequnetly and are faster. Enjoy the rolling Croatian hills, you will be able to see devestation caused by the fighting in the early 90's. A sobering part of your trip.

Restaurant

Great food, Great location! An Egyptian-themed Italian Resteraunt in Croatia. Really. The menu includes delicious traditional Italian dishes such as gnocchi, pesto, risotto and antipasti but you will probably be suckered in by their great pizza. Big and tasty and a great value at about 3 USD. Get a few and share. Waitstaff speaks English. After dinner, sample local spirits such as Pear Brandy and Slivovitz. Dinner for three plus a round of drinks came to less than 14 USD (total). Downstairs is a cafe with a fun interior design. They play a lot of American music that is antiquicated by our standards but still fun. Located in the ruins of Diocletian's Palace, across from the Chapel.

Attraction

There are many way to get a great view of Split. One of them is to take a stroll in the Marjan hills in the western-most part of Split. These hill can be accessed by walking west down the main boulevard and climbing the many stairs that take you to the beginning of the path. Also located here is a cafe where you can enjoy a cup of some of the best coffee in the world, or a Croatian beer.

There is a broad path that will lead you up the hill, the incline is gentle and is suitable even for children. You may chose to leave the path, climbing in an area that can best be described as deciduous forest. There are many great picnic spots in the woods. You can hike to the top of the hill where there is a Croatian Flag that flys proudly over Split. Also, there is an old zoo at the top of the hill (and there is a fountain here where you can fill up your water bottle). Relax on a bench and watch the ships sail into port. A relaxing outdoor experience.
