Our visit included: -Visits to the spas at the Rimrock Hotel and the Banff Hot Springs -Skiing at Sunshine Village and Lake Louise -Private horse-drawn open sleigh ride -Driving a dogsled across a frozen lake near Canmore. -Soaking in the outdoor hot spring in Banff during a snowfall. -A gourmet dinner and wine-tasting at a 4-diamond restaurant (Classico in the Rimrock Hotel, Banff) -Considered xc skiing in Lake Louise, but partner was worn out. Quick Tips: I've never stayed at a better hotel than the Rimrock in Banff, and certainly not for the price (given the current excellent exchange rate for Americans). While the activities in and around Banff are c...Read More

The price above is in American dollars at the current exchange rate of $.63USD to $1 CAD. We paid $184CAD for a room for 2 with breakfast for a "superior" (low-end of a 3-tier room price structure), but were upgraded for free to a "deluxe" room. The primary difference in the rooms is the quality of the view. Ours was a magificent view of mountains and the Bow River valley. We had a 2-Queen non-smoking room. The beds were very comfortable and there were oversized chairs near the window for enjoying coffee and the view in the morning while we wore our hotel-provided terry robes and slippers. The room was stocked with Aveda bath and body products, a coffee maker, corkscrew and bottle opener and a m...Read More

Giorgio's Trattoria

Giorgio's is a fairly large restaurant in downtown Banff. It's divided into different levels and rooms however, which helps to keep down the noise level. The kitchen is on the upper level and open if you are interested in seeing the cooks do their stuff. While the entrees are not especially exciting, everything we had was done well. I had a green salad with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes to start and fresh focaccia with a dish of balslmic vinegar and olive oil was complimentary. Pizza was good, by Banff standards and the linguine in white clam sauce was very flavorful and included some whole clams. My only complaint about this restaurant was that I think we got the only unpleasant w...Read More

Classico Restaurant

Classico has a relatively small a la carte menu. We chose one of their seasonal tasting menus. There is a 3-course or an 8-course option. We went on a Tuesday when both tasting menus and the wine accompaniment menu were discounted. With the discount, the 8-course meal was $65 CAD per person and the wine was $35 CAD. They have an extensive wine list, but most of the bottles were $70 or more, making the wine choice pretty straight forward. Not only did we get more wine for the money with the wine-tasting option, the wine selections were made by a professional familiar with both the menu and the hotel's wine stock. The cuisine was a mix of European, American and Candian. For instance, the en...Read More

One of the things a traveler hears a lot about when visiting Alberta is its famous beef. The Saltlik does a mighty fine job in preparing this local source of pride. According to their literature, Saltlik cooks its fine cuts of beef in "a 1200 degree infrared oven." My husband and I were very impressed with the quality of the beef, the seasoning and cooking of the meat and the array of sauces that the chef created to pair with the various cuts of meat. Entrees are served on their own and side dishes come in portions that are large enough to satisfy two or three people. We chose the seasonal vegetable which was a lovely grilled asparagus with fresh parmesan cheese shaved over the top....Read More

It's a fabulous experience, especially after a long day skiing, to soak in these waters (40 degrees C, or 105 deg. F) in the cold air of Sulphur mountain. We visited three times in one week as it was a 5 minute walk from the Rimrock hotel where we were staying. Our best experience was the afternoon when it was snowing. It can get a little crowded at times, but the spectacular view and the mix of the cold air and hot water are truly invigorating. The springs have been in use by the general public for more than 100 years, but were presumably known to native people before that. The facilities here were updated in the 1990s. The cafe is barely worth mentioning. ...Read More

You can then drive yourself or take a shuttle high up into the mountains above Canmore for the tour. The drive up is in itself an experience. It's very steep in sections, but is kept plowed by the power company so that they have access to the dams that dot the river on the way down the mountain. Several tours are available. We took the two hour intro tour of the Spray Lakes area. There is also a 4 hour tour, a 10 hour tour and an overnight tour. Moonlight 2 hour tours and a helicopter tour are also available. ...Read More
