A travel journal to Lawrence by EmmaPoet

Lawrence, Kansas is incredibly diverse for it's size; a playground for young adults.

  • 4 reviews
A commerce extension of the KU campus, Massachusetts Street is the major hang-out district, and runs north/ south. It is impressively artsy and has affordable ethnic restaurants, retro-furnitures stores, eclectic coffee shops that dispense liquors and beer, bars that feature live music nightly, independent bookstores, and a fine arts theatre.

Quick Tips:

The best way to enjoy Massachusetts Street is to come with friends when the weather is mild on a weekend night. Maybe sport some punk jewelry. Bring some cash and plan to do some furniture browsing, go to a restaurant and then catch a show at the fine arts theatre. Afterwards, head to a bar for some live music.

A most excellent college experience.

Restaurant | "Free State Brewery"

Here is a local brewery with pride. Excellent service, their staff is quick, knowledgable, smart and polite. They can recommend any of the 7-8 unique beers the brewery offers, which are very well mixed, good body, and the darker ales have a distinct coffee/roasted flavor.

You'll find the best food here you can get at a brewery, with American, Indian, Italian and Middle Eastern dishes on the menu.

Restaurant

Beautiful 2 story restaurant with 1920's modern styling. The staff is youthful, which is uncommon for an upscale restaurant, but you're in Lawrence. Daring appetizers, such as Oysters Rockafeller.

French and Italian cuisine. Cigars. Brandies and liquors. This is a very romantic restaurant.

Restaurant

Sometimes I want food of excellent quality without having to buy a large platter with a side salad, etc...$$$ Argentinean meat is well spiced and tender, and these dishes are exotic. Margaritas and imported beer served. The service is slow, but the atmosphere is casual and food is excellent.
